Richard J. 'Dick' Paine

Richard J. “Dick” Paine, 97, of Fort Wayne, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Monday, June 20, 2016, at 11:58 a.m. at his daughter’s home.

Mr. Paine was a member of Huntington Catholic High School’s first graduating class in 1937 and played on the first basketball team from a small Catholic school to win state and compete at nationals. He served in the Texas 16th Army Division from 1941 to 1945, fighting in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany, including the battles of Anzio and Monte Casino. He was employed by Our Sunday Visitor for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, and a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus.

He was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Huntington to Jack and Helen Scheiber Paine. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Rita Gallagher.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Mary Helen (James) LaMarca, of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Erin Brock, Vince (Jennifer) LaMarca, Brian LaMarca and Renee LaMarca; and six great-grandsons.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016, at 1 p.m., with calling one hour prior to Mass, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 10700 Aboite Center Rd., Fort Wayne. Rev. Matt Sobereski will preside. Burial, with military honors, will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.
