Harry D. “Brownie” Brown, 86, of Hartford City, IN, and a native of Huntington County, IN, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Lutheran Life Village, in Kendallville.
Mr. Brown, a 1946 graduate of Jefferson High School in Huntington County, had lived in Hartford City for 58 years. He retired in 1989 from Shell Oil Company, where he worked as a driver for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of Millard-Brown American Legion Post 156, in Montpelier.
He was one of the last deployed “Seagoing Cowboys,” tending livestock aboard the relief ship Henry Dearborn as the animals were shipped by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) to countries devastated by World War II. He served in Korea as a sergeant with the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, earning the Korean War Service Medal.
He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Jefferson Township, Huntington County, to Howard and Celia Roberts Brown. He married Lois Mae Wamsley on April 19, 1952, in Lancaster, and she survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Kathy Brown-Berry, of Hopewell, NJ, and Connie (Jim) Williams-Amos, of Hudson; four grandchildren, Blaine (Mandy) Williams, of South Milford; Try An (Anthony) Mitzner, of LaGrange; David (Julie) Berry, of Baltimore, MD; and Jessica Berry, of Washington, DC; and two great-grandchildren.
Calling is Saturday, April 25, 2015, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, 2015, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Glancy-H. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. A service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Jeff Wolheter officiating. Interment will be at the Van Buren Cemetery, in Van Buren.
