Charlotte 'Kiddo' Smart

Charlotte “Kiddo” Smart, 75, of Roanoke, IN, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at 9:34 a.m. at her home.

Mrs. Smart was an Avon representative for 41 years and had been a TAB columnist since 1985. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Roanoke, where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality and the parish council. She also served as sexton of St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, coordinated the Roanoke Food Pantry and cooked for the Senior meals. She was a representative for the Deanery Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) for more than 30 years, served on the Roanoke Inter-Church Council since 1973 and was a member of Church Women United.

Mrs. Smart was also a member of the Amicitia Club, volunteered with the American Red Cross and previously coordinated the St. Jude Bikeathons in Roanoke for 20 years.

She was born May 13, 1939, in Huntington to Norbert E. and Garnet M. Fulton Bickel. She married Leroy Smart on June 1, 1957, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, and he survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Richard Smart and Bernard (Laura) Smart, both of Roanoke, and Christopher Smart and Anthony (Sara) Smart, both of Huntington; two daughters, Elaine (Fred) Best, of Roanoke, and Patricia (Gary) Johnson, of Huntington; six brothers, James (Eve) Bickel, Daniel (Myra) Bickel, Joseph (Jannie) Bickel, Patrick (Martha) Bickel and Mark (Debbie) Bickel, all of Huntington; and Frederick (Gay) Bickel, of Roanoke; five sisters, Mary Ann Olinger, Rita (Paul) Kulb and Sondra (Carl) Ness, all of Huntington; Nancy Burnau, of Fort Wayne; and Pamela (Steven) Fleck, of Andrews; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Calling is Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, from noon to 8 p.m, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held a the church on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to Mass. Rev. John Pfister and Rev. Dale Bauman will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Roanoke.
