Philip H.'Phil' Rupel

Philip H. "Phil" Rupel, 81, of San Mateo, CA, and a native of Andrews, IN, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

Mr. Rupel served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After earning a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, he served a tour in the United States Army. He then joined the Peace Corps, teaching mathematics to university students in Pakistan. After returning to the United States, he worked for Lockheed Corporation for many years and, for the last 15 years, was contracted out to NASA at Ames Research Center, Moffet Field.

He taught scuba diving and volunteered as a tutor at San Mateo Adult High School and the College of San Mateo.

He was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Andrews to Hildra and Hazel Rupel. His first marriage was to Patricia Browne. He is survived by his second wife, Kathy Ross.

Additional survivors include three sons, Bartholomew (Brenda) Rupel, William Rupel and Timothy (Rachel) Rupel; and four grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha, Katie and Ella.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at 7 p.m. at Crippen & Flynn Carlmont Chapel, in Belmont, CA.
