Charles E. Hayden

Charles E. Hayden, 77, of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 11 p.m. at his home.

Mr. Hayden graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1954 and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Ball State University. He retired in 1997 from Huntington North High School, where he had taught English, speech, drama and journalism for 33 years. He served as the sponsor of both the Campus, the school newspaper, and Deka, the school yearbook.

After retirement, he served as manager of the Huntington North High School auditorium. He was active in the Huntington Theater Guild and the Pulse Opera House, in Warren. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He was a past president of the Huntington County Classroom Teachers Association and a member of the Huntington County Retired Teachers Association and Indiana State Retired Teachers Association.

He was born June 3, 1936, in Indianapolis to Ernest E. and Doris Merrit Hayden. He married Jean A. Carroll Thoma on Dec. 18, 1971, in Huntington, His wife survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Daniel D. (Pete Jones) Hayden, of Sacramento, CA, and Christopher T. Hayden, of Huntington; a daughter, Joyce A. (Sam) Bentz, of Huntington; a brother, Jim E. (Earlene) Hayden, of Plainfield; and two grandchildren, Joseph Bentz and Benjamin Bentz.

Calling is Wednesday, July 10, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington. A service will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 530 Guilford St., Huntington, with Rev. Robert Land officiating. Burial will be at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Huntington.
