For nearly 20 years now, quilters and creators of all skill levels have been gathering at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wednesday mornings, making quilts for those in need.

Now, after working as much as possible during 2020, the group is ready to ship out 61 finished quilts to Maryland.

Year-round, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., around 15 to 20 quilters gather together to cut fabric, sew squares and put finishing touches on their quilts, which are then all saved to be shipped off to Maryland in the fall. Many of the quilters are around the age of 70, but people of any age and any skill set are invited to join the group for fellowship.

“You don’t even have to be Lutheran,” says Joyce Gravely, one of the quilting group members. “We have snacks and a devotional and make quilts! It’s all about the fellowship.”

After being sent to Maryland, the quilts may be sent all over the world, depending on where the need comes up. The blankets end up being used for a multitude of things besides warmth or comfort, like being made into luggage, clothing and tents. “There’s a place for everyone in our group,” Gravely says. “It’s great Christian company.”

Anyone who is interested in joining the quilting group may attend. The group starts their efforts in the fall, ending right before the summer season hits.

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 648 LaFontaine St., Huntington. The quilting group meets in the church basement, which can be accessed at the John Street entrance.
