FS students learn about giving back to community after making bread

About 25 fourth and fifth grade students at Flint Springs Elementary School learned about giving back recently, starting with a lesson on how to bake bread.

The school’s Enrichment Club, which offers the kids unique experiences, partnered with King Arthur Flour in its “Bake for Good Kids” program. The youngsters learned how to bake the bread, then took home enough ingredients from King Arthur Flour to make two loaves. They brought one of those loaves back to school to give away.

Flint Springs teacher Connie Holzheuer, who chairs the school’s Lives to Share Committee, says the idea to embark on the project came from Clinic Assistant Mindy Krider.

“She’s the one that contacted King Arthur Flour and got us accepted,” Holzheuer says. “It’s really exciting … This is the best way that I could think of that kids would really be excited, and they would get that whole, full circle of the delivery.”

Krider says the Bake for Good Kids program is all about teaching the kids math and science as they learn the basics of how to turn flour, yeast, sugar and water into bread.

“But at the same time, they actually give us enough flour for all of the kids to make one loaf of bread for themselves, and one to give to charity,” she says. “We decided this was a really good program that we wanted to do here so that we could give back to the community. A lot of our kiddos, they see the need. They don’t exactly understand it, so I wanted to be able to give that to them.”

On Friday, Jan. 27, the Enrichment Club members gathered in the school gymnasium to view a video on how to get started baking bread, led by fifth grade teacher John Stoffel and his helper, Mike Stephan. Then they received a bag with the ingredients measured out to make two loaves and made plans to bake them over the weekend.

On Monday, Jan. 30, the club kids brought their second loaves back to school in the special bags provided. They headed to Love In the Name of Christ on Tuesday, Feb. 1, to donate them to the ministry’s food pantry.

“I brought a notebook so I could take notes,” says Brodie Lindaas, 10, a fourth-grade student. “My favorite thing that I’ve baked would be dirt pudding. I made brownies one time by myself, but I used the wrong pan so they turned out all crumbly. It didn’t look like the picture.”

Brodie says his main goal is to learn how to bake; however, he’s seen people get food from Love INC before and wants to help out.

“It would be really nice to them and it’s really nice,” he says. “I’m baking bread for homeless people who don’t have food.”

Baking pot pies is fifth grader Mia Brockhaus’ specialty. But the 11-year-old says it’s important to bring a loaf back to school to give to someone else.

“It’s important to make sure that you can let everybody you can have food to eat,” she says.

When the students delivered their bread to Love INC, they took a tour of the agency’s food pantry and clothing store, spending a brief time helping to assemble food packages tor the pantry’s clients.
