School board members approve summer school proposal

Members of the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved a proposal for summer school classes during their meeting on Monday, March 23.

Classes are offered to students requiring remediation or whom teachers think could benefit from them. Courses in both math and language arts will be available for all grade levels, while a few additional courses are offered to high school students.

School officials hope that much of the cost for the Summer School Jump Start program will be paid for by the state.
Dates and course offerings at Huntington North High School include:

• June 3-26 - Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, English 9, English 10, English 11, Technical Communications, U.S. History and U.S. Government 1st semester.

• July 6-31 - Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, English 9, English 10, English 11 and U.S. History 2nd semester.

These classes will only be offered to current high school students who have not earned their math, social studies or English credit in one of the courses listed above. Students will attend four hours per day for four weeks for a total of 80 hours per credit earned.

Classes for elementary and middle school students will be held July 13-31. Students will attend classes for three hours per day for three weeks for a total of 45 hours.

Classes include elementary language arts and math, which will focus on Indiana Academic Standards appropriate for each grade level, and middle school language arts and math.

The middle school courses are necessary to prepare students for the End of Course Assessments.

Students will be identified for the summer school program based on their NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) and ISTEP+ (Indiana Statewide Testing of Educational Progress-Plus) scores, as well as teacher recommendations. Those who have not passed the ISTEP+ or have not made adequate progress on fall-to-spring NWEA testing will be encouraged to attend.

The NWEA results enable teachers to focus on all students completing first through eighth grades who have specific needs in language arts and math, and provide additional instruction to those entering third through eighth grades, which will help the students meet their ISTEP+ goals in the spring testing.

Classes for high school students will take place at Huntington North. Classes for elementary school students will be held at Flint Springs Elementary and Salamonie School. Classes for middle school students will be at Salamonie and Crestview Middle School.

Breakfast and lunch will be available at the high school, Flint Springs Elementary and Crestview Middle School. Snacks will be provided for students attending Salamonie School.
