Penalty deadline date for prop taxes is coming

Property taxes were due May 11, however due to COVID-19, Gov. Holcomb mandated a 60-day waiver of penalties. The 60-day waiver of penalty due date is July 10.

Any taxes paid after July 10 will incur a penalty. Indiana Law (IC 6-1.1-37-10) requires the county treasurer to add a late payment penalty to the unpaid portions of the amounts due for each installment of property taxes.  The penalty will be in the amount of five percent of the unpaid tax if the installment is completely paid on or before the 30 days after the due date and you are not liable for delinquent property taxes first due and payable in a previous installment for the same parcel.  If taxes are due for more than the first installment then the penalty will be in the amount of 10 percent of the unpaid tax.  Taxes paid more than 30 days after July 10 will incur a 10 percent penalty.

Payments can be made with a tax bill at local banks through July 10. Participating banks are Bippus State Bank, First Farmers Bank & Trust, First Federal Savings Bank, First Source Bank and First Merchants Bank.

Payments can be mailed to: Huntington County Treasurer’s office, 201 N. Jefferson St. Room 104, Huntington, IN 46750.  Enclose the tax bill and print the taxpayer’s phone number on the check. If a receipt is requested, include a postage paid, self-addressed envelope.

Payments can be paid with credit or debit cards online or by phone, but not in the office. Go online to https://billpay.forte.net/huntingtoncointax/or phone 877-690-3729 and use jurisdiction code 2421.

Payments can be made in the courthouse, room 104, treasurer’s office during normal business hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Taxpayers who have properties that have been certified for tax sale must pay all delinquencies and tax sale fees to be removed from the tax sale list. Accepted forms of payment for tax sale properties are cash, certified check or money order and must be paid at the treasurer’s office or by mail. Local banks will not accept these payments.

The tax sale for Huntington County will be held Sept. 25.
