18 students get $750 apiece from Shuman scholarships

The Huntington County Community Foundation announces Alex Bishop, Alec Bolding, Julia Crist, Johnna Cummins, Brooke Dafforn, Hannah Johns, Hannah Lehman, Gracey Linker, Cade MacAleese, Olivia Markley, Jacob Miller, Tori Neal, Olivia Rosen, Brianna Shane, Mikayla Skinner, Britany Taylor, Sophie Updike and Maggie Winters as recipients of the 2020 Charles & Wilma (Sanger) Shuman Family Scholarship, totaling $750 each.

Bishop, a rising sophomore at Purdue University Fort Wayne, is majoring in computer science with a minor in mathematical science/information technology.  He is the son of Heather Bishop and Jeremy Bishop. Bishop plays trombone in the PFW Honors Band.

Bolding, a junior this fall at Purdue University Fort Wayne, is majoring in secondary education in history with a minor in economics. He is the son of Stephanie and Todd Bolding. A sports enthusiast, Bolding has participated in basketball and soccer. He has also been on the dean’s list the last two years.
Crist will be a sophomore at Ball State University this fall, majoring in advertising. She intends to study abroad in Spain to complete a minor in Spanish. Her parents are Bethany and Michael Crist, of Huntington.

Cummins, a rising senior at Huntington University, is the daughter of Amy and Dennis Cummins of Warren. She is majoring in agri marketing and agri econ and finance.
Dafforn will be attending Purdue University Fort Wayne this fall to work towards a fine arts degree in photography.  Her goal is to own and operate a photography business.  Her parents are Cheryl and Scott Dafforn, of Roanoke.

Johns, a freshman this fall at Purdue University, will major in elementary education with a minor in psychology.  She is the daughter of Jennifer Herrberg and Daniel Johns. She is an avid softball player and has volunteered many hours at the United Way, Flint Springs Elementary School and the Dan Quayle Museum.

Lehman, a graduating senior at Huntington North High School, will be attending Goshen College as a freshman this fall.  She intends to major in music and secondary education. She is the daughter of Sharon and Jeffrey Lehman, of Huntington. Her goal is to teach middle or high school choir.
Linker will attend Ball State University majoring in elementary education. She is the daughter of Megan and Jace Zahm, of Huntington.

MacAleese, a graduating senior from Huntington North, will be attending Manchester University majoring in history education with a minor in psychology. He is the son of Richelle and Matthew MacAleese.

Markley will be starting her freshman year at Huntington University this fall. She intends to pursue a degree in English and education with a certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). She is the daughter of Janel and John Markley.

Miller, a freshman this fall at Ball State University, intends to major in wildlife biology and later attend veterinary school focusing on wildlife.  His extracurricular interests include band, archery and wrestling.  His parents are Kelley and Steve Miller, of Huntington.

Neal attends Purdue University Fort Wayne, majoring in elementary education. Teaching and furthering her education are in her plans for the future. She is the daughter of Michele Massengill and Mathew Neal.

Rosen, a rising sophomore at Huntington University, is majoring in biology pre-med, with a goal of becoming a physician’s assistant. Maintaining a grade point average of 3.5 and higher put her on the dean’s list during her freshman year. She is the granddaughter of Lisa and Tom Berry, of Andrews.

Shane, a graduating senior at Huntington North High School, will attend Huntington University as a freshman this fall. Her plan is to attain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Her parents are Dawn Shane and Mark Shane.

Skinner, a senior this fall at Ball State University, will be working to complete a major in speech-language pathology. She intends to apply to graduate school and complete clinicals during the spring semester. Her parents are Kristina Alvarado and Jeremy Skinner.

Taylor will be attending Huntington University to attain a degree in elementary education with a minor in special education. She is passionate about becoming a teacher for elementary-aged youth. Her parents are Cecelia and Dana Taylor, of Huntington.

Updike, a graduating senior at Huntington North High School, will attend Manchester University this fall, majoring in elementary education and minoring in special education and French. She is involved in band and is a member of the National Honor Society.  Her parents are Jamie and Dan Updike.

Winters, a junior this year at Indiana Wesleyan University, is  working towards majors in both Business Administration and Entrepreneurship. Her future plans include managing her own business. She is the daughter of Marcella and Bruce Winters.

Charles and Wilma Sanger Shuman were residents of Huntington County and both farmed in southern Huntington and Wabash counties. They also valued the importance of an education and created this scholarship for graduating Huntington North seniors and non-traditional students.
