Several county officials at AIC County Legislative Conference

Kittie Keiffer, Ron Kline and Terry Miller, members of the Huntington County Council, were among nearly 300 county officials from around the state who attended the Association of Indiana Counties (AIC) 2019 County Legislative Conference.

County officials met with their legislators to express their concerns about local government issues at this two-day event, held Feb. 5 and 6 at the Hilton Indianapolis. AIC staff members briefed county officials about legislation being discussed in the Indiana General Assembly that would have an impact on counties.

Attendees heard from Gov. Eric Holcomb as well as several other state elected officials, including Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Auditor of State Tera Klutz, Rep. Phil GiaQuinta and Sen. Mark Messmer. AIC members also met with state legislators who attended a lunch discussion on Feb. 6, as well as representatives from other state agencies throughout the event.

Workshops addressed the importance of improving Indiana’s broadband infrastructure, particularly in rural communities. Also discussed were the challenges that local governments could face with marijuana legalization with respect to planning and zoning issues, taxes and financial matters, regulatory policies and more. To date, more than half of states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes and more than 10 allow it for recreational use. Many other state legislatures are also considering related measures this year.
