Forks seeking help for tours, park interpreting

The Historic Forks of the Wabash is actively seeking new individuals to volunteer with guiding and interpreting at the park.

Guides and interpreters alike are members of the local community or students and faculty from the university. Over the years, the number of volunteers has steadily declined. Many volunteers are aging and no longer able to help in the capacity they once were.

Each year the Forks invites students, typically second to sixth grades, to immerse themselves in history at the indoor and outdoor museum. The museum features a wigwam, schoolhouse and canal room as well as the homes of the Nuck family (German immigrants who settled in this area) and Chief Richardville (the chief of the local Miami Indians).

Guides oversee each group of students and are tasked with bringing their group to each location the museum offers. At each location, an interpreter in period-appropriate clothing greets students. The interpreter explains the history behind each location.

Those who are interested in volunteering or would like more information on how to get involved with the Forks of the Wabash are asked to call the Forks of the Wabash at 356-1903 or send an email to info@forksofthewabash.org.
