School board caps New Tech at $200,000 for first two years on 4-3 vote

Following yet another tight New Tech vote of 4-3, the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees has decided Monday, April 26, to cap the first two years of spending on the project at $200,000, including up to $118,000 from the Capital Projects Fund (CPF).

Board member Tom King expressed his support for the initial estimated expenditure during years one and two - $118,000 - as well as additional money from grants.
Board Vice President Rick Brubaker echoed King's support by making the motion to approve the amount to be spent, including up to $82,000 from the $125,000 available grant monies.

The motion, seconded by King and also supported by members Troy Smart and Dr. Jennifer Goff, specified that the money go toward structural costs.

That allocation is expected to get the project through the first two years, including the current year for construction and this coming fall for the first year of implementation.

The option selected by the board includes a horseshoe shaped hallway and a conference area with windows for teacher-student visibility, Huntington North High School Principal Jeremy Gulley explained.

Depending on whether or not the board decides to go with new paneling and ceiling tiles, the option could run between an estimated $153,000 and $195,000 for the first two years, Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer said.
He added that the corporation has not spent much, if any, CPF money to date for New Tech.

New Tech can hold 125 students for the first year. Currently, 113 students are signed up, the board was told.
