Leonard gets slot on Native American Indian Affairs Comm.

State Rep. Dan Leonard (R-Huntington) was recently selected to serve on the Native American Indian Affairs Commission.

The commission studies and makes recommendations to appropriate federal, state and local governmental agencies in areas of employment, education, health, housing and civil rights.

Leonard said his district, which includes all of Huntington County and portions of Allen and Wells counties, boasts historical ties to the Miami, Shawnee, Iroquois and Huron Native Americans.

“My interest and research in Native American history goes back many years,” Leonard said. “Taking on these issues continues to add to my overall knowledge while also helping preserve Indiana’s Native American Indian communities, culture and heritage.”

Leonard said interim study committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, can be viewed live online at iga.in.gov. This site also provides committee calendars and meeting agendas. Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify.
