Huntington County residents who have a special talent to share are invited to try out for Huntington Idol, a fundraiser for the Huntington House homeless shelter.

Tryouts will be held Friday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Huntington Baptist Church, 2435 Waterworks Rd.

The performance will be staged July 16 at 7 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, with a rehearsal at the church on July 16 at 5 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will help support the needs of Huntington House residents and maintain the shelter, located at William and LaFontaine streets.

Although the tryouts won't be held until mid-June, Jenny Simpson, Huntington House supervisor, says potential performers are advised to apply for the tryouts no later than May 28. A limited number of applications will be available the day of tryouts, she says.

Any Huntington County resident age 10 or older is eligible to try out. Acts in the categories of vocal or instrumental music, dance and drama/theater are acceptable. Acts must be family friendly, and no pets or dangerous routines will be allowed. Each act should be between three and five minutes long.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place acts.

There is a fee to try out. Those accepted for the show in July must also pay a registration fee, which is due by June 26.

Applications for the tryout session are available at Huntington House, 576 William St., and online at www.huntingtonhouse.org.

Performers must attend the tryouts, rehearsal and performance. The public can purchase tickets to watch the tryouts. Admission to the performance is by donation.

The Huntington Idol performance on July 16 will feature dessert and beverages as well as the entertainment, and VIP tables are available. Door prizes will be awarded.
