Voyage re-enactment will come to Forks Sept. 26

The Ouiatenon Canoe Voyage will make a stop at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park, in Huntington, on Sept. 26.

The voyageurs and canoeists will present at 7 p.m. program at the Forks to explain the voyage and why they are taking part. The program is free and open to the public.

The voyage is being undertaken in conjunction with the 50th Feast of the Hunters Moon festival in West Lafayette.

A team of 10 re-enactors will travel from Fort Wayne to Huntington on Sept. 26, then continue on the Wabash River until arriving at Fort Ouiatenon, in West Lafayette, on Sept. 29. The total voyage is 140 miles.

The Ouiatenon is a commemoration of the 300th anniversary of a voyage made in 1717 when the government of New France sent French marines, voyageurs and others to establish a fort at the mouth of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers. The fort served as a center for both trade and defense.
