Pam Updike has announced her decision to run in the May primary as a Republican candidate for County Council District 3.

Updike has been involved in local politics for the past 16 years, serving two terms as Huntington County Clerk and one as Huntington city clerk-treasurer.

She is serving her first term on Huntington County Council.

"It has been my intention for the past 16 years to serve this community and do what is best for our constituents," Updike says. "You have to make tough decisions and stick with them because you are trying to do what is best for the whole county."

She notes that County Council controls budgets for all county offices, and that balancing those budgets has been made more difficult by tax caps, tax appeals, federal mandates and state cuts. The council recently asked all officeholders and department heads to cut their budgets by 7 percent.

"Sitting through three budget cycles has given me the experience to be proactive in making sure that we are being as frugal as possible without cutting vital services to county residents," she says.
