Penalty added to unpaid prop taxes

A penalty is now being added to Huntington County property taxes not paid by the May 10 due date.

Huntington County Treasurer Paula Farley says a penalty of 5 percent will be charged if the spring installment is paid on or before 30 days after the due date and if the taxpayer is not behind on previous property tax payments for the same parcel. If taxes are due for more than this year’s spring installment, the penalty will be 10 percent of the unpaid tax.

Properties may be eligible to be sold at a tax sale if the first installment tax payment and penalty from 2016 or previous years are unpaid. Those properties may be removed from the tax sale if payments are made no later than June 19. Affected property owners were notified of their properties’ tax sale status in letters mailed Feb. 10.

The tax sale for Huntington County will be held Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. in the GAR Room on the second flow of the Huntington County Courthouse. Properties in the tax sale will be listed at www.sritaxsale.com later this summer.

The treasurer’s office is located on the first floor of the courthouse and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Payments may be mailed to 201 N. Jefferson St., Room 104, Huntington, IN 46750.
