Six students win ‘Next Generation’ teacher scholarships from ICHE

Five Huntington County students and one from Wells County are among the 200 Indiana students selected for Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarships.

Area recipients and the schools they plan to attend are Huntington North High School seniors Jacob Allred, Huntington University; Mackenzi Cannici, Trine University; Erika Kennedy, Taylor University; Andrew McElhaney, Valparaiso University; and Marissa Stephan, Ball State University.

Also earning a scholarship is Meghan Yencer, a senior at Southern Wells Junior-Senior High School, who plans to attend Franklin College.

The scholarships are awarded by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after graduation. The scholarship pays up to $7,500 annually for four years.

A total of 642 students applied for the scholarships and the recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, teacher nomination and an in-person interview.
