Huntington County Lions clubs award scholarships to three

The Huntington County Lions clubs of Andrews, Bippus, Huntington and Roanoke have awarded three $500 scholarships to Huntington North High School seniors McKenzie Haneline, Jana Krueger and Trevor Szelis.

Haneline is the daughter of Kim Haneline Patmore and Jack Haneline. She will attend Purdue University majoring in meteorology and possibly double minoring in telecommunications and business.

While in golf season, both playing and managing, she received the Scholar Athlete Award for having a GPA of 9.0 or better; she was inducted into the National Honor Society; and was elected treasurer of Huntington North High School’s National Honor Society.

She was awarded the Presidential Scholarship from Purdue University, recognizing her high GPA and SAT score. She is in the top 20 percent of her class.

Krueger is the daughter of Karen and Jay Rinehart. She will attend Indiana University-Bloomington, majoring in marketing and fashion merchandising.

She has been a four-year member of the Varsity Singers and a member of Spanish Club, Campus Life and National Honor Society. She participated in spring musicals.

She also helped tutor at St. Peter’s First Community Church’s afternoon homework help program for middle and high school students, plus worked in the church nursery and taught Sunday school classes. She is in the top 25 of her class.

Szelis is the son of Trent and Amy Szelis. He will attend Trine University to obtain a degree in civil engineering.

He has received junior varsity and academic letters, and was a scholar athlete for four years. He participated in high school football and intramural sports through Huntington County Baseball, Kim League basketball and Salvation Army basketball.

He has volunteered at the soup kitchen, Blessings in a Backpack and Operation Backyard. Throughout high school, he maintained a 10.8/11 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is in the top 20 percent of his class.
