INDOT improving traffic lights along U.S. 24

The Indiana Department of Transportation has begun improving traffic signals at numerous intersections along U.S.-24 in Allen, Whitley and Huntington counties.

Michiana Contracting was scheduled to begin the signal modernization project near Fort Wayne on March 20 and will move west along U.S.-24 toward Huntington County, wea-ther permitting.

The project consists of new signals heads, cabinets and other upgrades at the intersections of U.S.-24 and Ind.-114 in Whitley County and U.S.-24 and Stults Road/CR 200W in Huntington County. Work will also take place on the signals on U.S.-24 at the I-69 southbound and northbound ramps.

In addition, several intersections will receive upgrades that include flashing yellow arrows on left-turn signals. The flashing yellow arrows have been shown to improve traffic flow and reduce waiting times at signals.

Drivers will see two types of yellow arrows when they approach a new flashing yellow arrow signal. The flashing yellow arrow will allow left-turning traffic to proceed, after yielding the right-of-way to oncoming traffic. The steady yellow left-turn arrow retains its standard meaning that the signal is about to change to a steady red arrow, and drivers should prepare to stop or, if they have already entered the intersection, they should complete the left turn when oncoming traffic has cleared.

Intersections in Allen County receiving the new flashing yellow arrows include:
• U.S.-24 at Covington Road/Ellison Road.
• U.S.-24 at Liberty Mills Road.
• U.S.-24 at Homestead Road.

Intersections in Huntington County receiving the new FYAs include:
• U.S.-24 at Broadway.
• U.S.-24 at Guilford Street.
• U.S.-24 at Ind.-5/U.S.-224.
• U.S.-24 at Flaxmill Road.
• U.S.-24 at Ind.-9/Park Drive.

Motorists should expect to encounter temporary daytime lane restrictions in all locations. The $489,000 project includes signal upgrades in several counties. The project is expected to finish in late spring.
