HU students participate in innovation challenge

Students from five colleges and universities located along the I-69 corridor, including Huntington University, participated in the I-69 Collegiate Innovation Challenge, spending the weekend of Feb. 10 through 12 collaborating to solve a problem.

The Grant County Economic Growth Council hosted the event, which was held at Swan Lake Resort, in Plymouth. Participating universities and Indiana Michigan Power helped sponsor the weekend.

Participating from HU were seniors Emma Reese, Constanze Goelz, Nathan Hahn and James Couchman; junior Erin Van Kampen; and Dr. Brock Zehr, assistant professor of business and economics.

The event also drew students from Indiana Wesleyan University, Taylor University, Ivy Tech Community College and Grace College.

The students formed five-member teams, with each team consisting of one student from each school. The teams were asked to propose a for-profit business solution to the social problem of prison overcrowding.

Reese was a member of the winning team, which proposed utilizing the creativity of former inmates to create design and marketing products for small businesses.
