Republican ballot for May 4 primary continues to heat up

The Republican ballot for the May 4 primary elections continues to heat up.

As of Jan. 25, the race for the party's nomination for Huntington County Assessor had grown to three candidates; and a second hopeful entered the races for both Huntington County Sheriff and Dallas Township Trustee.

Joan "Joanie" Stoffel, 1365 Park Hill Drive, Huntington, is the third Republican to file as a candidate for the county assessor's office. Stoffel, who previously held the now nonexistent office of Huntington Township Assessor, joins political veteran Donald Schoeff in challenging incumbent Terri Boone.

In the sheriff's race, long-time city police officer and former city police chief Terry Stoffel, 1565 Cramer Rd., Andrews, also made his candidacy official. He's up against Thomas Carney, a long-time county deputy, in the race to succeed Sheriff Kent Farthing. Farthing has served the maximum number of terms allowed by law.

Steven J. Juillerat, 265 E. Madison St., Andrews, has filed notice that he will attempt to keep his post as Dallas Township Trustee. He faces a challenge from Julie Newsome.

Also filing on the Republican ballot was Donald Davenriner, who plans to seek renomination as fourth district representative on Huntington County Council.

David Keller, 1567W-100S, Warren, filed as a candidate for the Republican nomination as Jefferson Township Trustee, an office he currently holds.

Leslie Graham, 3886W-608N, filed as a candidate for Republican state convention delegate.

While local candidates file their papers in the Huntington County Clerk's office, those seeking state-level offices must file with the secretary of state's office.

Luke Messer, of Shelbyville, has filed to seek the Republican nomination as 5th District United States representative.

Jim Banks, of Columbia City, has filed as a candidate for the Republican nomination as 17th District state senator.

And incumbent Daniel J. "Dan" Leonard, of Huntington, has filed for the Republican nomination as 50th District state representative.
