Early filings create races for five offices

In just the first two days of the candidate filing period, races have been created for five offices on the Republican ballot in the May 4 primaries.

And at least one contest is assured for the November general election.

The filing period for the primaries opened Jan. 20 and will continue through noon on Feb. 19.

Already, three Republicans have filed for their party's nomination as Huntington County recorder, a post currently held by Angie Garner. Garner has served the maximum number of terms allowed by law. Seeking to replace her are Republicans Ray Williams, Debra Hersey and Cheryl Schenkel.

Andrew Krieg, the lone Democrat to declare for any office during the first two days of the filing period, is also seeking the recorder's office.

Political veteran Don Schoeff plans to battle incumbent Terri Boone for the Republican nomination as county assessor.

Jerry Helvie, the incumbent as first district county commissioner, is being challenged by Carl Zinsmeister in the primary.

Both Kendall Mickley and Jaime Miller are eyeing the second district County Council seat.

On the township level, Larry Brewster and Kathy Morton are candidates for the Warren Township trustee post currently held by Morton's husband.
