Horace Mann paraprofessional terminated

Acting on a recommendation by Huntington County Community School Corporation Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer, members of the Huntington County Community Schools Board voted without explanation to terminate the “at-will” employment of special services paraprofessional Alaura Uecker.

The action was taken during the board’s meeting on Monday, Jan. 11.

Uecker worked for Horace Mann Elementary School and did not have a contract with the corporation.

The HCCSC Board of Trustees offered no explanation or discussion regarding the termination other than Secretary Rex Baxter’s concern of possible repercussion from the decision. Shafer said that a meeting with Joe Wiley, the corporation’s attorney; David McKee, assistant superintendent for business; and Erica Cunningham, personnel and benefits coordinator was held to discuss the matter, as well as an internal meeting at the Administrative Services Center.

“I would say there’s always possibilities of repercussion, but as advised by legal council, I think we are well within our rights to (terminate Uecker’s employment),” Shafer told Baxter.

The motion was approved 6-0, with board member Troy Smart absent.
