YSB offers training in teen suicide prevention

The Teen Suicide Prevention Task Force will host a free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training on Dec. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The training will be held at the Youth Services Bureau office, 134 Maple Drive in Huntington. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch with them for this training.

The QPR training will provide the participants information about the extent of the problem on a national and state level, common myths and facts associated with suicide, warning signs and risk factors, tips for asking suicide questions, methods for persuading suicidal individuals to receive help and ways to refer at-risk people to local resources.

"This is a topic most do not want to deal with or even acknowledge. Sadly, however, sui-cide will most likely touch the majority of family in Huntington County in some way," says Ryan Beeching, QPR instructor. "It is important we know the facts and are able to help provide support to those who are under the belief suicide is the only answer to what-ever they are dealing with."

The Teen Suicide Prevention Task Force is made up of representatives from local law enforcement agencies, the Huntington County Community School Corporation, Bowen Center, LACE, social service partners and YSB.

Space is limited. To reserve a seat, call the YSB at 356-9681 or 800-298-5444. Online registrations may be made by emailing ysbadm@ choiceonemail.com.
