Huntington County Free Health Clinic open house is Aug. 22

An open house at the Huntington County Free Health Clinic will be held on Friday, Aug. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A ribbon cutting to officially open the clinic building at 1255 Engle St., Huntington, will be held at noon.

The clinic, located for many years at Trinity United Methodist Church, moved Jan. 1 to the Engle Street location, the former home of the Family Practice Associates medical office.

The Free Health Clinic opened in 2004 and currently sees patients on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are preferred and may be made by calling 355-0722. However, walk-ins are accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The clinic is open Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for medication pick-up.

Last year, the clinic saw 405 individual patients who made a total of almost 1,500 visits. The clinic staff includes Rosemary Wagner, clinic coordinator; Teresa Close, who recently joined the clinic as nurse practitioner; and Dr. Anette Lane, medical director. Patients are also seen by Dr. Theppanya Keolasy and Dr. Richard Spencer, DDS.

The clinic provides free treatment and medications for colds and other acute illnesses, as well as ongoing care and referrals for chronic conditions such as diabetes, COPD, heart disease, depression and more.

Wagner recently began a pilot program involving seven volunteers with diabetes which includes nutrition education with a nutritionist from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and exercise sessions at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA.
