An American Red Cross blood drive in honor of 3-year-old Wyatt Schmaltz will be held Saturday, July 26, at Life Church.

The boy, a Huntington resident, is battling neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that starts in young nerve cells.

"Wyatt is strong and he's a hero to many of us for fighting so hard," says Wyatt's father, Joseph Schmaltz. "Wyatt has received several blood transfusions and will continue to receive them."

Wyatt's family hopes to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood donors for patients like Wyatt and many others.

"We want anyone and everyone who can to come out to donate," says Joseph Schmaltz.

The blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Life Church is located at 900 E. State St., Huntington.

Donors are asked to call 800-RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org to schedule a blood donation appointment.

A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet height and weight requirements.
