Assessors to visit several areas of Huntington County this summer, Boone reports

Properties in several areas of Huntington County will be visited by assessors this summer, Huntington County Assessor Terri Boone has announced.

Twenty-five percent of each class of property - residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural - must be reassessed each year, according to state guidelines.

This year's reassessment will begin after July 1 and will include many, but not all, properties in Warren, Dallas and Union townships as well as the city of Huntington. Property taxes are based on a property's assessed value, and those properties being reassessed this summer will see the new assessment reflected in property taxes payable in 2016.

Huntington County has hired a contractor, Accurate Assessments, to complete the reassessment. Accurate Assessments employees will be wearing badges and driving marked vehicles. If the homeowner is not at home when the contractor visits, a yellow door hanger will be left. Boone asks all property owners to respond to her office to ensure correct data collection.

The contractors will physically inspect each property, looking at buildings, garages, pools and other items to make sure the correct information is on file. They will also take photographs of all dwellings, front and rear, as well as some outbuildings.

For additional information about the reassessment process, call the county assessor's office at 358-4800.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
