Vintage plane to visit Huntington airport

A 1929 Ford Tri-Motor plane will visit the Huntington Municipal Airport June 26 to 29.

The plane is owned by the Experimental Aircraft Association and the visit is hosted by the city of Huntington.

Visitors are invited to look at the aircraft during the airport's normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. They may also book a ride on the plane by visiting www.flytheford.org or calling 877-952-5395.

The Tri-Motor, nicknamed "The Tin Goose," was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from 1926 to 1933. The plane that will visit Huntington was manufactured in 1929 and sold to Pitcairn Aviation's passenger division, Eastern Air Transport.

It was later used by Cubana Airlines and the government of the Dominican Republic, as a barnstormer and crop duster, and as a bomber and for smoke jumpers. It was the primary setting for the Jerry Lewis comedy "The Family Jewels."

The aircraft was heavily damaged in a 1973 thunderstorm. The wreckage was purchased by the EAA and restored over 12 years.
