Summer reading programs begin today, June 2, at the Huntington City-Township Public Library's main library and Markle branch.

The reading program is designed to motivate families to broaden their reading experiences, with different segments of the program - all falling under the general theme "Fizz! Boom! READ!" - offered for different age levels. Readers can sign up to participate in the program at any time during the summer.

Infants through pre-schoolers can join "What's the Weather?" and listen as books are read to them. The goal is for each child to listen to 42 books over the summer. This program is available at the Huntington library only.

The picture book club, "Zap! Boom! Books!," or the chapter book and nonfiction book club, "Robots Rule!," are offered at both libraries. At the Markle library, these programs are open to children from birth through sixth grade; at the Huntington library, they are open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Children reading or listening to picture books have a goal of completing 42 books, while those reading chapter or nonfiction books have a goal of completing 16 books.

Young adults from sixth through 12th grades are challenged to read 10 books in "Spark A Reaction - Read!" The young adults will be given trivia questions, with a chance to win weekly prizes for answering the questions correctly, and will be eligible for a grand prize drawing at the end of the program. This program is offered at both libraries.

Two special events are scheduled for the young adult members of the summer reading program. They can take part in the Coffeehouse Experience and Open Mic Night at the main library on July 10. Performers can register by calling 356-2900. Spectators are welcome.

Young adult reading club participants are automatically eligible to enter the Nerdy Science Duck Race, which begins June 2 and ends July 19 at the Huntington library. Teens will propel a nerdy rubber duckie down a water-filled race course by blowing air through a straw.

Adults can join Literary Elements and check out books, e-books, e-audiobooks, movies, music CDs, magazines and newspapers for a chance to win weekly and grand prize drawings.

The grand prize is a Nook e-reader, and weekly prizes include books and gift certificates. This program is offered at both libraries.
