Huntington council vacates parts of three alleys

The Huntington Common Council vacated portions of three undeveloped alleys during a brief meeting on Tuesday, May 13.

Council members also established an economic revitalization area that will allow developers of a Senior housing complex to apply for tax abatements, and approved documents submitted by several businesses showing that they are complying with terms of tax abatements already granted.

The alleys, which were platted but never developed, are all in the Hedde Street area. One runs off the end of Hedde Street just west of Bechtol Street; the second runs off the end of Caldwell Street just north of Hedde Street; and the third is parallel to Hedde Street between Bechtol and Condit streets.

Council members suspended the rules and approved the vacations on both required readings.

The council also gave final approval to the establishment of an economic revitalization area encompassing several properties in the Warren Street-West Park Drive neighborhood. An Ohio company plans to rehabilitate an existing building and construct a new building which will become Senior Citizen apartments. The designation will allow the company to apply for tax abatements on the project.

With a tax abatement, taxes are phased in over a 10-year period. The property owner pays no taxes the first year, and the percentage of tax paid increases each year until it reaches the full amount after 10 years.

Several area businesses have already received tax abatements for expansion projects and purchase of new equipment. The companies must submit regular certification to the city council showing that they are in compliance with the terms under which those abatements were granted.

On Tuesday, council received compliance reports from Indiana Box LLC, 1200 Riverfork Drive East; Gerdau Macsteel, 25 Commercial Rd.; Bryan Machine Services, 435 Commerce Drive; Huntington Powder Coating, Danbar Properties, DKE LLC and Huntington Sheet Metal, all at 1675 Riverfork Drive East; Memcor, 1320 Flaxmill Rd.; and Mickley's Machinery, M&S Powder Coating and M&S Industrial Metal Fabricators, all at 5 Commercial Rd.
