Staving off floods

A construction worker peers into a hole along Taylor Street across from Hier's Park on Friday, Feb. 28. The hole eventually became home to a pump station, designed to alleviate flooding on the south side of Huntington such as occurred during heavy rains last April. During that incident, a large amount of water flowing by gravity in a drainage ditch at Hier's Park backed up through a manhole near Ace Hardware on South Jefferson Street, triggering flooding throughout the neighborhood, explains Anthony Goodnight, the city's director of public works and engineering services. The pump will allow the flow of water through the ditch to be controlled, preventing a backup, Goodnight says.
