2 locals receive state Tri Kappa scholarships

The state organization of Kappa Kappa Kappa has awarded scholarships to 14 students across Indiana, including two to area college students.

Local recipients are Kayleigh Mower, a Markle resident attending Anderson University, and David Vielma, a Fort Wayne resident studying at Huntington University.

Mower received one of 12 $1,000 Academic Scholarships, which are awarded to students who have completed at least one academic year in a baccalaureate or graduate program.

Mower is currently a junior at Anderson, where she is working toward a degree in Christian ministries with minors in family science, Spanish and biblical studies. She has maintained a grade point average of 4.0 and has been named to the dean's list for five semesters.

Mower has also served as a discipleship coordinator, has been a member of the University Leadership Council, volunteered for the Karing for Kids program and worked in two offices at Anderson University.

Vielma received one of two $1,000 Key Scholarships, which are awarded to students who did not begin college immediately after high school.

Vielma enrolled in HU in 2012, about 13 years after graduating from high school, and plans to graduate in 2016 with a degree in not-for-profit leadership- /organizational management.

He works part time for the United States Postal Service and as associate pastor at New Covenant Worship Center, Fort Wayne. He previously served as an operations manager for Youth for Christ.

The local Tri Kappa scholarship committee included Lori Mickley, chair, and Nicole Johnson, Amber Love and Katie Davidson.
