Huntington North High School senior Cheyanne Geideman captured the People's Choice Award and Superintendent's Award at the Huntington County Community Schools' 2013 Arts Express exhibit.
The exhibit, held March 23 at Crestview Middle School, featured the works of more than 1,500 students in kindergarten through high school. Visitors were invited to vote for their favorite.
"Hundreds voted on this and there were a lot of top vote getters, but Cheyanne's was far above the rest in votes," says HNHS art teacher Jerry L. Wright.
Geideman's drawing of a girl in a book-filled room has been framed and will be displayed at Huntington North through the end of the school year. As the recipient of the Superintendent's Award, The artwork will then be moved to the school corporation's administrative offices in the Horace Mann Education Center, where it will remain on display for a year. After that time, the framed work will be returned to Geideman.
Framing was provided by Paula Bittner of Four Corners Custom Framing, in Huntington.
"The artwork is to show what books can unlock in one's imagination and where the focus in school should be," Geideman says.
"Cheyanne did this image for an advanced drawing assignment challenging her to make a masterpiece - and evidently she accomplished her goal," Wright says.
"She has been a fantastic student in a whole host of ways and with many types of media. Her academic standing matches her art talent, so she should go far in the career of her choice."
Geideman says she plans to attend Purdue University and continue to study and practice art.
She is the daughter of Mona and Scott Geideman, Andrews.
