Six candidates vying for Miss Huntington title on March 23

A new Miss Huntington will be selected on Saturday, March 23.

Six candidates will perform, answer questions and show their poise in a quest to be crowned the 47th Miss Huntington and earn the scholarships that go along with the title.

The pageant begins at 5 p.m. Saturday at Central Christian Church, 500 MacGahan St., Huntington, and is open to the public. Tickets will be available at the door.

Reigning Miss Huntington Kara Mawhorter will crown her successor. Mawhorter, a Whitley County resident, earned an undergraduate degree from Ball State University and plans to pursue a master's degree in speech pathology this fall.

Candidates for this year's crown include the reigning queen's sister, Karlee Mawhorter; the 2012 pageant's second runner-up, Madison Kroh; and Alli Harris, Sydney Enyeart, Sara Alford and Ashley Price.

Karlee Mawhorter is a 19-year-old Whitley County resident and a freshman at Ball State University, Muncie. Her parents are Michael and Rita Mawhorter. She plans to present a vocal performance during the pageant.

Kroh is also a 19-year-old Ball State freshman. She is the daughter of Steve and Lisa Kroh and a resident of Wabash County. She plans to entertain the audience with a pointe dance.

Harris, 22, is a Huntington County resident. She is a senior at Purdue University, West Lafayette, and is the daughter of Ken and Bev Harris. She will perform a vocal number during the competition.

Enyeart attends Wabash High School. She is the 17-year-old daughter of Blake and Carol Enyeart and resides in Wabash County. She will perform a monologue as her talent presentation.

Alford, 22, of Wells County, is in her first year of the master's program at Purdue University, West Lafayette. Her parents are Russell and Jackie Alford. She plans to perform a jazz dance during the pageant.

Price, 18, attends Wabash High School and resides in Wabash County. She is the daughter of Rick and Cathy Price. She plans to present a vocal and piano performance during the pageant.

The Miss Huntington pageant has been sponsored by the Huntington Optimist Club since 1963. The current directors are Ruth Marsh and Sandy Stephan.
