A last-second three-pointer in the second overtime by visiting New Castle guard Jordan Hahn on Friday, Jan. 23, sent the Huntington North High School boys’ basketball team down to defeat, 42-39.
After Huntington North’s Tannan Peters tied the game at 39-all with just under 10 seconds to play, the visitors got the ball to their sophomore guard, whose 21-footer from the right side sent the Vikings to their sixth defeat in 10 outings this season.

Courtney Beerbower’s free throws after being fouled on an offensive rebound with 3.8 seconds to play lifted the Huntington University women’s basketball team to a 57-55 victory over visiting Marian College on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
Taylor Foley, Alyssa Hurlburt and Liesl Davenport combined for 40 points on Wednesday, Jan. 21, to lead the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 61-46 victory over visiting Fort Wayne Northrop.
The Lady Vikes, improving to 6-9, used a 22-point burst in the second quarter to turn a 12-9 first quarter lead into a 34-22 halftime advantage. They held a 46-34 lead after three quarters.
Wins by swimmers Mariah Patrick, Sara Karst and Cassie Hacker and a diving sweep weren't enough for the Huntington North High School girls varsity swim team as it lost to host South Adams, 105-78 on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Patrick won the 50-yard freestyle, in :27.53, and Karst took the 100-yard freestyle, in :59.97. Hacker took home honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, in 1:14.99.
Amanda Kaiser scored 111 points to lead the sweep in diving. Rosemary Kaiser placed second and Taylor Meharg took third.
Skyler Ruschhaupt and Danny Scher each won two individual races and were on two winning relay teams to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity swim team over host South Adams, 101-79, on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Ruschhaupt captured the 500-yard freestyle, in 5:05.23, and the 100-yard breaststroke, in 1:04.15. Scher bested the field in the 50-yard freestyle, in :22.78, and led a Viking 1-2 finish in the 100-yeard freestyle, finishing ahead of teammate Shaun Marion in :50.11.
Poor shooting sunk the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team against host Columbia City on Tuesday, Jan. 20, as the Vikings were doubled up on the scoreboard, 56-28.
The Vikings, 4-5, hit only eight of 34 field goal attempts, including just three of 18 shooting from three-point range. They scored just four points in both the first and third quarters.
Jordan Beaver led HNHS with eight points and four rebounds. Taylor Harris had seven points and four rebounds.
Huntington Cahtholic School girls' basketball player Oliva Woolard works against the defense of St. Aloysius on Monday night, Jan. 19, in the HCS gym. The local fifth and sixth grade team beat its opponent from Yoder, 10-8.
Led by 140-pound champion Brant Hiple, the Huntington North High School wrestling team placed third at the Concordia Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Hiple led HNHS to 168 team points by collecting two pins and a decision on the way to winning his weight class.
Carroll won the nine-team meet with 233 points, Homestead was second with 218 and Marion finished fourth with 166.
The Huntington North High School boys' swim team placed fourth and the HNHS girls' swim team placed seventh in their respective competitions at the North Central Conference Swim Championships on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Fishers High School.
The boys' team scored 242 points behind second place finishes by Skyler Ruschhaupt and Daniel Scher, while the girls' team scored 193 points, led by the third place finish of the 200-yeard medley relay team of Mariah Patrick, Cassie Hacker, Kailtyn Batt and Sara Karst.

The junior center connected on 11-16 field goal attempts and eight of 11 charity stripe tosses as the Lady Vikings improved to 5-9.
HNHS turned a 28-25 halftime advantage into a 55-38 cushion after three quarters of play to pretty much secure the win.
