First-half hot streak sends HU women past Goshen

A hot steak in the first half put the Huntington University women's basketball team on the road to a 78-63 victory over visiting Goshen on Saturday, Jan. 9.

After scoring just seven points in a nine-minute span to help Goshen take a 16-15 lead, the Forester women hit 12 of 16 from the field and closed out the half with a 27-16 run to take a 43-32 lead into the lockerroom at half.

Although the visitors got the margin back to five points in the second half, the HU women were able to ring up their 11th win in 16 outings this season.

Trio take JV titles at Northfield wrestling invite

Three Huntington North High School wrestlers took home titles from the Northfield Junior Varsity Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Freshman Barik Hiple at 119 pounds, freshman Adam Berlier at 135 and sophomore heavyweight Andrew Mason each went 3-0 on the day to finish first in their classes.

Berlier had three pins on the day and Hiple and Mason each got a pair on the way to winning.

Freshman David Grover at 103 pounds placed second, going 3-1 on the day, with two pins.

Ruschhaupt, medley relay set school records in HNHS boys' swim loss

Despite two school records, the Huntington North High School boys' swimming team lost to host Muncie Central, 103-79, on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Senior Skyler Ruschhaupt set one record individually and joined with Shaun Marion, Kris Royer and Danny Scher for the other in the 200-yard medley relay to lead HNHS, but once again the lack of depth was the Vikings' downfall.

Ruschhaupt got his school mark in the 100-yard backstroke, slicing through the water in :55.78 for the new mark and the win, one of two individual victories on the day for him.

Poor marksmanship doomed the Huntington North High School girls' basketball team on Saturday, Jan. 9, as it fell to visiting Logansport, 54-34.

Falling to 1-12, the Lady Vikings hit only 13 of 51 shots from the field for 25.5 percent, no match for a Logansport team which hit 19 of 34 from the field for 55.9 percent.

The Lady Vikes put themselves in a 13-3 hole after one quarter of play and went into the half trailing 31-14. They trailed 39-22 heading into the final frame.

Eagles go 2-1 against Rams in hoops action

The Huntington Eagles homeschool basketball program's middle school teams faced off against Huntington Catholic on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The 14U Eagles smacked the seventh and eighth grade Huntington Catholic boys' team, 51-19.

Leading the way for the Eagles were Clay Sickafoose with 17 points and Chris Lieffers with 12, and Brooks Hitzfield and Ian Kissell each added seven.

For the Rams, Nathan Pike scored six and Conner Kreider and Sam Harold each scored four.

Fisher's 22 carries HNHS past Northrop in 51-50 squeaker

Kevin Fisher canned 22 points to carry the Huntington North High School boys' basketball team past visiting Northrop in a 51-50 squeaker on Friday, Jan. 8.

After Huntington North, 4-6, controlled the first half and took a 33-20 lead into the lockerroom, Northrop bounced back big in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 18-6 to draw within one at 39-38 heading into the final frame.

Fisher knocked down 7 of 11 field goals and 8 of 9 free throws for his game-high scoring total. He also had a team-high eight rebounds.

HU wears out in final minutes, loses to #3 Bethel

Playing without two starters, the Huntington University men's basketball team ran out of steam in the final 10 minutes and lost to visiting Bethel College, 98-91, on Thursday, Jan. 7.

The Foresters, 12-6, held a 10-point lead early in the second half and were holding their own against third-ranked Bethel for the first 30 minutes of the contest, but at that point Bethel put on a 10-point burst and held on for its 15th win in 17 outings.
