HNHS girls play catch-up, but lose in OT to Northrop

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team played a game of catch-up in regulation time before falling to host Northrop in overtime, 49-43, on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The Lady Vikings, 3-13, fell behind by seven points in the first quarter at 12-5, but clawed their way back into a 39-all tie at the end of regulation in a contest which saw six lead changes and nine ties.

The Lady Bruins then hit 8 of 9 free throws in the overtime period to claim the victory.

HU baseball coach Frame earns state HS association honor

Huntington University baseball coach Mike Frame has been selected to receive a Victory Club Award from the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association in recognition of Frame earning his 600th career win on April 25, 2009.

Frame will receive the award at the IHSBCA State Baseball Clinic awards banquet on Jan. 22 in Indianapolis.

The Victory Club Award is presented to baseball coaches beginning with his or her 100th win and is then presented to the coach with each additional 100th win thereafter.

Gottschalk rolls 300 game; Elzey gets 800 series at Rainbow

Bob Gottschalk rang up a perfect 300 game at Rainbow Lanes on Dec. 21 in the Hoosier League.

Gottschalk, who finished with a 706 series on the night, averages 206 in league play.

He has coached youth bowlers for many years, including coaching the Huntington North High School girls' team several years ago when it won the state title.

On the same night Gottschalk rolled his 300, Matt Elzey rolled a 299 game on the way to an 806 series.

Elzey is the operator of Doc's Pro Shop at Rainbow.

HNHS girls' swim team tops South Adams

Sophomore Cassie Hacker and freshman Andrea Okuly each won two individual events and were members of two first-place relay teams to carry the Huntington North High School girls' varsity swim team to a 103-77 win over visiting South Adams on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Hacker placed first in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.81 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:16.87. Okuly took the gold in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.67 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.65.

South Adams edges Viking boys' swim team

Lack of depth with a small squad again plagued the Huntington North High School boys' varsity swim team as it was edged by visiting South Adams, 93-92, on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The Vikings won nine of 12 events, but only had five second-place finishes and two third-place results to give South Adams the point advantage.

Seniors Skyler Ruschhaupt and Danny Scher each took two individual events and were on two winning relay teams to take control of the scoring for Huntington North.

Crestview boys split with Marion McCulloch

The Crestview Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team fell to Marion McCulloch 33-27 on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Dylan Harter led Crestview, now 10-5, with eight points and seven rebounds, and Matt Hogan backed the team up with six points and five rebounds.

The Cougar seventh grade boys' basketball team fared better than the eighth-graders, defeating Marion McCulloch 49-42.

Caleb Landrum dominated the game by scoring 25 points. Jordon Seabolt added 11 and Adam Woods had five for Crestview, now 11-4.

Both teams face Bellmont tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Slow night on offense results in HNHS boys' loss to Columbia City

The Huntington North High School boys' basketball team had only two players score more than five points on the way to a 47-31 loss to visiting Columbia City on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

On the night, 4-8 Vikings hit only 11 of 29 field goal attempts for 37.9 percent in the slower-tempo game, including missing all eight of its 3-point tries. The Eagles went 15 for 31, 48.4 percent.

Coolman carries Rebel girls to Montpelier Tournament championship

The Salamonie School eighth grade girls' basketball team won both of its games to place first in the Montpelier Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 16.

In the championship match, Salamonie crushed Montpelier 31-16.

Paige Coolman led the way for the Rebels with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Tatum Johnson and Gabby Mason each added four points for Salamonie.

In Salamonie's first match of the tournament, Coolman scored 24 points and had 16 rebounds to lead the team to a 35-20 victory over Hartford City.

Mason backed up Coolman with four points.

 

Crestview girls' hoop teams claim own tourney

Both Crestview Middle School girls' basketball teams won their respective divisions in their own first annual Lady Cougar Classic on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Crestview's eighth grade girls' basketball team defeated Whitko in the championship round 39-20.

Erin Rethlake led the Cougars in the game with 12 points. Jessie Drew had 10 points and Cailey Baker added six points.

To get to the championship, the eighth-graders defeated Northfield, 22-14.

Jessie Drew led the way for Crestview with 12 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Jessie Beaver added five points.

Eagles 14U wins Bethelehem Lutheran tourney

The Huntington Eagles 14U homeschool boys' basketball team earned first place at the 12th annual Bethlehem Lutheran Eighth Grade Boys' Basketball Tournament hosted by Bethlehem Lutheran in Ossian on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16.

The Eagles defeated Saint Peter Immanuel 44-31 on Saturday to win the champion title.

In that game, Brooks Hitzfield led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Clay Sickafoose had 10 points, five assists and five steals and Chris Lieffers had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Eagles 14U team loses to Indy

The Huntington Eagles 14U boys' basketball team fell to the visiting Indianapolis Wildcats 39-22 on Thursday, Jan. 14.

Bruce Hitzfield led the Eagles, now 7-4, with six points. Brooks Hitzfield added five points and six rebounds, and Chris Lieffers had five points, five rebounds and six steals.

The Eagles' 12U boys' basketball team defeated the Junior Wildcats 38-20.

Ian Kissell took the lead for Huntington with 15 points. Tyce Frank had nine points and Bruce Hitzfield added eight points and nine rebounds for the Eagles, now 6-2.

 

Lady Vikings use season-best marksmanship to sink Anderson, 61-48

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team used its best shooting of the season to grab a second straight win as it beat host Anderson, 61-48, on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Improving to 3-12, the Lady Vikings canned 23 of 41 field goal attempts for 56.1 percent against Anderson. After a 50 percent exhibition in the first half helped them gain a 31-23 lead, the Lady Vikings hit 12 of 19 from the field for 63.2 percent in the second half to hold off the 1-15 hosts.
