Donaldson scores 21 to lead HU women past Goshen, 67-55

Jenna Donaldson scored 21 points and had eight rebounds to carry the Huntington University women's basketball team to a 67-55 win over host Goshen on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Huntington, 18-7 overall and 9-4 in the Mid-Central Conference, took on a quick lead when Lauren Meese opened the game with a long bomb just 20 seconds in, but the Foresters could only muster 10 points over the next nine minutes and trailed 14-13 with 10:56 left in the half. Donaldson keyed an 8-0 burst with six points of her own to give HU a 21-14 advantage, a lead it would never lose.

The Huntington Optimist Club recently held its annual Tri-Star Basketball Skills Competition, which tests skills of passing, dribbling and shooting. The contest is open to boys and girls, ages 8 to 13. The Huntington winners, who will advance to the regional competition in Warsaw on Saturday, Feb. 13, are (front row from left) Katie Paolillo, Aiden Disinger, Martin Harold, Peyton Dorset, Peyton Butler; (second row from left) Ian McCutcheon, Alex McCutcheon, Reece Martin, Sarah Fryman, Kylie Kaylor and Corinne Zay.

 

Landis pumps in 41 to lead Eagles to win over WACHE

Jed Landis pumped in 41 points to carry the Huntington Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team to a 72-65 win over host W.A.C.H.E. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Caleb Featherston backed up Landis with 13 points and Jonathan Yarde added seven points. Landis also grabbed nine rebounds.

After being outscored by the Warriors 18-10 for the first quarter, Huntington, now 27-3, stepped up its game to score over 20 points in the second frame and leave the court at halftime with a score of 33-26 for the Eagles.

 

Lady Eagles romp past WACHE

Lighting up the scoreboard in every frame, the Huntington Lady Eagles varsity homeschool basketball team dominated host W.A.C.H.E. 57-26 on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Huntington hit double digits in both the first and second quarters, all while allowing no more than seven points per frame to reach a 32-13 score at halftime.

Rebecca Daniels recorded 20 points and eight rebounds on the day to lead Huntington, now 18-7. Kaleigh Shultz and Catherine Weaver also joined Daniels in the double-digit club, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Cold outside, Foresters cold inside, lose to Goshen

The weather forecast for cold outside was apparently taken too much to heart by the Huntington University men's basketball team as it fell to visiting Goshen, 89-82 on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

The Foresters, 15-12, shot 26 of 70 from the field for 37.1 percent, but kept themselves in the game with 27 of 33 marksmanship from the free-throw line.

Dates changed for girls' basketball sectional

All games in the girls’ basketball sectional at Jay County have been backed up a day, with the championship game now scheduled for Monday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.

Huntington North High School will play its first game on Saturday, Feb. 13. That game was originally scheduled for Friday.

The new sectional schedule is as follows:

Friday, Feb. 12 — Jay County vs. Marion, 6 p.m.; Homestead vs. Fort Wayne South Side, approximately 7:30 p.m.

4 Lady Vikes to bowling semi-state; team wins regional title

Earning their way to the bowling semi-state single compeltition next week, by virtue of their efforts at regional on Saturday, Feb. 6, are Lady Vikings (form left) Tonya Crago; the individual champion; and Audrey Hiner, Lesley Love and Ayla Yeiter.

Tonya Crago bowled a 600 series to take the individual regional champion title and she also helped lead the Huntington North High School girls' bowling team to the team regional title on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Crago went 214, 174 and 212 for her three games, nine higher than the runner-up, fellow Lady Viking Lesley Love. Due to a delay in starting time because of weather, individual finishes were determined by total pins instead of a stepladder final.

HNHS boys' bowling team, three individuals make it to semi-state

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity bowling team and three bowlers qualified for the state tournament at the Indiana High School Bowling regional in Muncie on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Tyler Neff took the individual runner-up spot, rolling a three-game total of 694 with games of 207, 231 and 256. Adam Fruit and Tyler Carroll also made the 602-pin cut for semi-state with respective games of 620 and 610.
Fruit rolled games of 245, 203, 172 and Carroll had scores of 234, 200 and 176.
