Fawcett, Stell lead Vikings' JV past Homestead

After a quiet first quarter, Reid Fawcett launched a 35-yard touchdown strike to Braydin Stell to allow the Huntington North High School junior varsity football team to score first and give the Vikings momentum to defeat visiting Homestead 16-9 in its season opener on Monday, Aug. 23.

Stell later rushed 54 yards to score the Vikings' second touchdown. Andrew Coe completed a 44-yard field goal to secure Huntington's win.

On defense, Cameron Hackney and Nathan Sutter forced two fumbles.

The win leaves the JV Vikes with a 1-0 standing.

 

Jets stun Viking netmen

The Huntington North High School boys' varsity tennis team didn't bring its game to host Adams Central as the Vikings lost to the Jets 0-5 on Monday, Aug. 23.

Ben North managed the best singles performance for the Vikings, losing 3-6, 4-6 to Tyler Snipe at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Phil Truitt fell to Nathan Barger 1-6, 0-6, while Keith Stambaugh dropped his match to Kam Fiechter 1-6, 1-6 at No. 2.

Homestead stops HNHS girl golfers

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity golf team couldn't keep its scores low enough as only Liz Conley scored lower than most visiting Homestead players in a 171-198 defeat of the Lady Vikings at LaFontaine Golf Course on Monday, Aug. 23.

Conley led Huntington North with a 43, but two Lady Spartans, Brianna Blumenhurst and Emily Olsen, shot 42s. Other Homestead scores were 43, 44, and 50.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Lady Vikings couldn't shoot lower than a 51. Maddie Meese and Morgan O'Banion each had the 51s, Shawna Titus shot a 53 and Laurisa Richard hit a 62.

HNHS soccer girls score 3 but only get draw

Although the Huntington North High School girls' soccer team managed three goals against visiting Norwell on Monday, Aug. 23, the Lady Vikings couldn't add a fourth score and left the field in a 3-3 draw.

Kelsey Hollowell took center stage for Huntington, scoring two goals. Allison Johnson added the third. Assists were recorded by Shelby Bradford and Lauren Bradbury.

Kaylie Dunn beefed up the defense with 15 saves.

Monday's match brought the Lady Vikes to a 2-1-1 record.

 

Wemhoff nets winner in second half as HNHS soccer boys triumph

Tyler Wemhoff scored the winning goal in the second half to take the Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Norwell on Monday, Aug. 23.

Isaac Wust had the assist on the goal.

Goalkeeper Kyle Williams had three saves. Now 2-1, the Vikings outshot Norwell 22-11.

In junior varsity action, the Vikings shut down Norwell 3-0.

Ethan Gordon, Tyler Henline and Josh Edwards all had goals, with Edwards and Henline each having an assist.

 

Three call-out meetings are set for Huntington North bowling teams

Three call-out meetings are set for Huntington North High School students interested in trying out for the Viking or Lady Viking bowling teams.

Each student trying out and a parent or legal guardian must attend one of the three meetings. Those unable to attend one of the three meetings must contact Jim Bischoff at 224-0839 before Aug. 30 to arrange a separate meeting.

The call-out meetings will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, a 2 p.m. at Oak Lanes; on Monday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. in Room 708 of Huntington North High School; and on Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m. at Oak Lanes.

Lady Viking runners place third at own invitational

Placing five runners in the top 23 finishers, the Huntington North High School girls' varsity cross coutntry team placed third as host at the Huntington North Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Sophomore Kayla Patrick and senior Natalie Spahr placed 10th and 11, respectively, to lead HNHS top a total of 79 points. Franklin Central was tops among the 13 competing teams with 48 points, and Carroll was runner-up with 68 points.

Patrick crossed the finish line in 20:02.70, and Spahr was a notch behind in 20:04.80.

Seniors Lewis, Crosley lead HNHS cross county team to fourth at own invite

Seniors Sean Lewis and Jake Crosley ran 10th and 11th, respectively, to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity cross country team to a fourth place finish at its own Huntington North Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Franklin Central, placing all five scoring runners within the first 15 finishers, won the competition with 45 points. Carroll placed second among the 15 teams competing with 84 points, Homestead was third with 101 points and the Vikings finished with 107 points.

Lady Vikings' JV volleyball team places third at JV Classic

The Huntington North High School junior varsity volleyball team won three of four matches and placed third at the JV Classic at Lafayette Jeff on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Unfortunately for HNHS, its only loss of the day came in its tourney opener, a 17-25, 20-25 knockdown with Valparaiso. However, the Lady Vikings picked themselves up and beat the host school, Merrillville and McCutchen to get their third place.

The Lady Vikes, 6-1, edged McCutchen, 25-24, in the only game played to detemine third place.

Wust scores pair as Viking booters dominate Manchester, 5-0

Sophomore Isaac Wust scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team to a 5-0 victory over visiting Manchester on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Improving to 1-1 on the season, HNHS also got goals from Tyler Wemhoff, Tayler Johnson and Colin Downey, and Chris Landrum, Igor Baptista and Denny Becker added assists.

The Vikings got two goals in the first half and three in the second half. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Kyle Williams only had to make one save on the day for his shutout.

Hollowell's hat trick leads HNHS soccer girls past Jay County

Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Hollowell scored a hat trick to lead the Huntington North High School girls' varsity soccer team to a 4-0 victory over host Jay County on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Alyssa Grabner scored the remaining HNHS goal as the Lady Vikes improved to 2-1 on the young season.

Goalie Kaylie Dunn only had to make one save to earn the shutout.

Lauren Bradburn and Rachel Herr recorded assists for HNHS.

 

Spartans shut down Vikings in second half on way to 55-30 win

A big first half offensive explosion by the Huntington North High School football team was overcome by host Homestead's second half defensive explosion as the Vikings fell, 55-30, on Friday, Aug. 20.

The Vikings took a 30-20 lead late in the first half before Spartan running back Cody Appenzeller scored the fourth of his five touchdowns to pull Homestead within 30-27 at the half. The second half was all Homestead as the Spartans pitched a 28-0 shutout to rack up the season-opening victory.

Lady Vikes volleyball squad loses to New Haven in four

The Huntington North girls' varsity volleyball team fell to visiting New Haven in four close games on Thursday, Aug. 19, 25-16, 17-25, 20-25 and 23-25.

Este Stoffel knocked down 15 kills and had 15 digs, and Kayla Koch dished out 23 assists to lead the Lady Vikings, 1-2 on the season.

Alexis Wygant added 19 digs. Allyson Trout served two aces and had 10 digs. Jessica Morgan put up four blocks.

The junior varsity Lady Viking volleyball continued its winning ways with a victory over New Haven on Thursday to improve 3-0.
