HNHS boy harriers use reserves to finish third at Wabash Invite

The Huntington North High School boys' cross country team ran its reserves as varsity and still managed to finish third out of nine teams at the Wabash Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Jacob Miller led the Vikings in 16th place. Garrett Humbert followed Miller in 19th place, while Sean Reed came in 21st. Kyle Lagemann and Zach Prather finished out the scoring for HNHS in 23rd and 27th, respectively.
Austin Hildman came in 30th and Jason Vogleman placed 31st to serve as Viking non-scorers.

Herber leads HU men's cross county team at Griak Invite

Joseph Herber finished 28th out of over 180 team competitors in 26:43 as the Huntington University men's cross-country team finished 21st of 28 teams in the Division II race at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 25.

As a team, HU raked in 569 points for its placement.
Nathan Rupp was second for the Foresters, finishing 115th in 28:06. Lance Wood was 116th in 28:06, Alec Rosario took 148th in 28:58 and Seth Murphy placed 162nd in 29:22 to round out HU's scoring.

HU men can't find back of net in loss to IWU

After giving up two goals in the first 25 minutes of the game, the Huntington University men's soccer team prevented more scoring, but couldn't find the back of the net, to lose to host Indiana Wesleyan University 2-0 on Saturday, Sept. 25.

IWU knocked in its first goal in the ninth minute and added its second in the 21st, all while outshooting the Foresters 16-1 in the first half.

Chris Fox had six saves for Huntington, while Drew Mattingly had two.

The Foresters dropped to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in the Mid-Central Conference.

 

HU women's soccer team can't catch up to Cornerstone

Huntington University's women's soccer team found itself playing catch-up for nearly all of the match as the Foresters lost to host Cornerstone University 4-2 on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Cornerstone opened the scoring with a goal in the opening minutes, and carried that lead to end the half 1-0, despite HU outshooting CU 4-3.

The Golden Eagles hit their second goal in the opening minutes of the second half, but Huntington finally made its mark on the board with a goal by Sam Cubic in the 54th minute.

Lady Viking golfers end season at regional

The Huntington North High School girls' golf team ended its season at the New Castle sectional with an 11th place finish among 12 teams competing.

The Lady Vikings combined to score a 404. Richmond won the meet with a 316, Hamilton Southeastern was second with a 322 and Noblesville claimed the third and final state-qualifying slot with a 326.

Laurisa Richard led the Lady Vikings with an 18-hole score of 93. Liz Conley shot a 96, Maddie Meese had a 107 and Morgan O'Banion carded a 108.

Shawna Titus was the HNHS non-scorer with a 109.

SPU Construction team wears down Frederick’s to take RYS 11-14 crown

SPU Construction recently won the Roanoke Youth Sports 11-14 soccer championship.

The SPU Construction team emerged as the winner of the double elimination tournament that wrapped up the season for Roanoke Youth Sports' 11-14 Soccer program.

The championship game featured SPU Construction and Frederick's Photography. SPU Construction wore down Frederick's Photography to win the game by a score of 5-1.

The two teams made it to the championship game by navigating the tournament bracket filled with teams sponsored by Coldwell Banker Roth Wehrly Graber, Automatic Door Controls, Builder's Mart and Clounie Landscaping.

HNHS girls bunch runners, take top spot at New Haven Classic

Bunching four runners from ninth through 16th places, the Huntington North High School girls' cross country team earned victory at the New Haven Classic on Saturday, Sept. 25.

With fifth scoring runner Robyn Karst placing 25th, the Lady Vikings scored 74 points to beat out runner-up Columbia city by 18 despite the Lady Eagles having the second and third place finishers.

HNHS boys' soccer team loses in rare penalty kick sudden death

The Huntington North High School boys' soccer team lost in a rare sudden death penalty kick overtime to host Muncie Central, 3-2, on Saturday, Sept. 25.

It took the sixth Bearcat penalty kick after two scoreless overtimes to give the hosts the 5-4 edge in penalty kicks and the win.

The Vikings, 7-4-1, battled back from a 2-0 hole to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of regulation, and thought they had won in the first overtime, but the side referee waved off Tyler Wemhoff's score due to offsides.

Vikings battle back, drop heartbreaker in final seconds to Giants

The Huntington North High School football team fought back from a 14-0 halftime deficit but host Marion scored with just 16 seconds left in the game to leave the Vikings with a 34-28 defeat on Friday, Sept. 24.

Quarterback Reid Fawcett bootlegged two yards into the end zone with 1:01 remaining in the contest as the Vikings tied the contest at 28-28, but Marion went the length of the field on the ground to untie it, with quarterback Kevin Davis going the final 20 to hit paydirt with just 16 seconds left.
