Herber, Ogle compete in NAIA nationals for HU

Huntington University had one representative in both the men's and women's races for the 2010 NAIA Cross County National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Vancouver, WA.

Junior Joseph Herber placed 198th in the men's championship, finishing in 27:30 on the 5K course.

Freshman Cendall Ogle took 239th in the women's championship, clocking in at 20:31 on the 3K course.

The men's race was won by Kennedy Kithuka of Wayland Baptist, a freshman who blistered the course in 24:02 to beat runner-up Abednego Magut of Azusa Pacific by 39 seconds.

HU women blitz Trinity in first half, coast to big win

The Huntington University women's basketball team blitzed visiting Trinity Christian College in the first half and wound up with a 77-46 win on Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Northview Inn and Suites Classic.

Picking up their fifth win in six games this season, the Foresters got double figure scoring performances from four players, led by Kelsey Green with 15 points.

Allison Greene and Lauren Meese each tallied 13 points and Amy Kramer came off the bench to add in 10 points.

Zawadzki puts up career-high 34 but Foresters lose to No. 11 Davenport

A career-high 34 points by Kellen Zawadzki couldn't help the Huntington University men's basketball team as it lost to Davenport University, 95-84, in the championship game of the Panther Invitational at Grand Rapids, MI, on Saturday, Nov. 20.

The 1-2 punch of Panthers' guard James Nelson and forward Nathan Cox, who scored 57 points combined, proved too much for the Foresters in their second straight battle of unbeatens.

Varsity and junior varsity Eagles top Michiana Mustangs

The varsity and junior varsity Huntington Eagles picked up wins as they hosted the Michiana Mustangs at the Salamonie School Gym on Friday, Nov. 20.

The varsity team won 70-54.

The Varsity Eagles, 7-1, were led by Samuel Daniels and Caleb Featherston, each with 23 points. Daniels added three rebounds and three steals. Featherston added six rebounds and eight assists.

Brock Hitzfield chipped in nine points and12 rebounds.
The Mustangs were led by Cody Beachy and Michael McKibbin, each with 16 points.

The junior varsity team won 46-31.

Foresters hang on for 85-82 win in battle of unbeatens

Tyler Shively's two free throws with 11 seconds left iced the game for the Huntington University men's basketball team as it hung on to beat Indiana East 85-82 in the Panther Invitational at Grand Rapids, MI, on Friday, Nov. 19.

The Foresters, 7-0, watched a 10-point lead disappear in the final 2:46 of the contest as IE closed within one at 83-82 on a layup by David Sanders with 27 seconds remaning in the contest.

A dunk by Seth Kisler had given HU an 80-70 advantage at the 2:46 mark before Indiana East mounted its comeback with a 12-3 run.

The friendly confines of the Merillat Complex apparently didn't provide the backdrop the Huntington University women's basketball team needed as it lost its first game of the season on Friday, Nov. 19, to visiting Judson University, 54-50, in the first night of the Northview Inn and Suites Classic.

Now 4-1, the Foresters hit just 19 of 65 field goal attempts for a paltry 29.3 percent - including going 0 for 17 from 3-point range.

HNHS girls' swim team loses opener to Norwell

The Huntington North High School girls' swim team fell to visiting Norwell 124-59 in its first meet of the season on Thursday, Nov. 18.

Sara Karst led the Lady Vikings with wins in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 2:12.64, and the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 6:09.70.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team, made up of Cassie Hacker, Andrea Okuly, Cassy Lange and Karst won its race with a time of 1:54.56.

Crestview girls defeat Salamonie twice on hardcourt

The Crestview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team defeated Salamonie School 32-21 on Thursday, Nov. 18.

Monica Minton and Morgan Butler led the way for Crestview with seven points each. Aly Grabner had four points.

For Salamonie, Danielle Kem scored eight points and Katie Littleford had seven.

Crestview improved to 3-0 on the season, while Salamonie dropped to 0-2.

Crestview's seventh grade girls' basketball team also beat Salamonie, 17-14.

Crestview, 3-0, was led by Ellie Lawson with 11 points.

Riverview girls split season-openers with Indian Springs

The Riverview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team lost its season-opener to Indian Springs Middle School, 45-31, on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Tasha Grover led the team with 20 points.

The Raiders' seventh grade girls' basketball team defeated Indian Springs 31-13.

Hannah Stoffel had 14 points to lead Riverview. Abbey Ness recorded seven and Sarah Fryman added six.

Both teams will play at Oak Hill Middle School on Monday, Nov. 22.

 

Crestview girls sweep Oak Hill

The Crestview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team slammed Oak Hill 33-15 on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Morgan Butler led the Cougars, now 2-0, with eight points and six rebounds. Corinne Tester had six points and five steals and Aly Grabner added six points of her own.

In seventh grade action, Ellie Lawson dominated the court with 17 points to lead Crestview to a 19-14 victory over Oak Hill.

The team is 2-0 on the season.

 

HU men's hoop team shatters Ohio State-Newark

The Huntington University men's basketball team shattered visiting Ohio State University-Newark, 109-58, on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

OSUN only had a three-point lead for a brief eight seconds at the beginning of the game before back-to-back three-pointers by Tyler Shively tied the game, then subsequently gave Huntington the lead by the 18:52 mark.

The Foresters never gave up that lead, and scored more points in the second half than the Titans did the entire game.

Four former student-athletes were inducted into the Huntington University Hall of Fame during the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Basketball Tournament hosted by HU on Saturday, Nov. 13. The inductees were honored for the contributions to their respective sports while at Huntington. Honored are (from left) Bruce Imel ('87, golf), Joy Gamble Koch ('90, volleyball and basketball) and Travis Bates ('91, track and field). Not pictured is Jacob Miles ('03, tennis).
