Riverview boys' basketbal teams fall to Lakeview

Austin O'Connell hit double-digits in points, but it wasn't enough as the Riverview Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team lost to host Lakeview Middle School 38-23 on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

O'Connell had 12 points to lead the Raiders, and Derek Snyder supported with five points.

The eighth-graders are now 1-2 on the season.

Riverview's seventh grade boys' basketball team also lost to Lakeview, 41-28.

Kory Goodrich scored nine and Trevor Brewer had six points.
The seventh grade team also dropped to 1-2.

Mahnensmith, Wang lead Otters in SWAC 'Odd Ages Rule'

The Huntington-Wells Otters swim club participated in the SWAC "Odd Ages Rule" meet at South Side High School in Fort Wayne on Friday through Sunday, Nov. 19-21.

The meet followed a format in which traditional age groupings were shifted up one year. Sarah Mahnensmith in the 7 and under females division and Duke Wang in the 12-13 year-old male division were runners-up for high point awards.

Free throw marksmanship helps lead HU to 10th win

Tyler Shively and Shane Merryman nailed 10 straight free throws down the stretch to help the Huntington University men's basketball team pound visiting Rochester University, 84-70, on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Shively, who was the dominant force in the HU offense with 29 points, had six straight and Merryman added four as the 10-1 Foresters held off the visitors after leading by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Okuly stars but Lady Vike swimmers fall to Oak Hill

Andrea Okuly won two individual events and was part of two first-place relay teams to lead the Huntington North High School girls' swim team as it fell to visiting Oak Hill 109-77 on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Okuly placed first in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:31.54 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:09.84. She combined with Cassy Lange, Cassie Hacker and Sara Karst to win the 200-meter medley relay in 2:05.12 and the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:53.14.

Doughty, Zook take wins as HNHS boys get beat in pool

Freshman Luke Doughty and senior Phillip Zook had the only wins for the Huntington North High School boys' swim team, as it was crushed by visiting Oak Hill 137-45 on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Doughty won diving for the Vikings with 181.50 points, and Zook won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:06.46.

The 11-man team had three second-place finishes. Zach Leffler took second in diving, Zook was the runner up in the 100-meter butterfly and Doughty, Zook, Aaron Gilmore and David Acra teamed up to take the silver in the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Butler leads CMS eighth grade girls past McCulloch

Morgan Butler scored 10 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Crestview Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team to a 34-29 victory over McCulloch Middle School on Monday, Nov. 29.

Aly Grabner supported with seven points and 11 rebounds and Monica Minton had seven points and seven rebounds.
Crestview improves to 4-1 on the season.

In seventh grade action, Elli Lawson had a team-high 12 points, but it wasn't enough as Crestview lost to McCulloch 34-22.

HNHS seeking hall of fame nominees

The Huntington North High School Athletic Department is requesting nominees for the Hall of Fame.

Criteria for membership includes:

• An athlete will be eligible for induction a minimum of five years after his or her high school playing career is finished.

• A coach will be eligible after having made outstanding contributions to the HNHS athletic department for a significant period of years and who have retired from coaching.

Evans leads HNHS wrestlers to 3-2 mark on Saturday

Alex Evans at 189 won all five of his matches as the Huntington North High School varsity wrestling team won three of five matches in a six-way tournament at Peru High School on Saturday, Nov. 27.

The Vikings defeated Delta High School 64-9, Peru 44-27 and Garrett High School 48-25, but lost to Bellmont High School 34-21 and Yorktown High School 40-24.

HU holiday baseball camp is Dec. 29-30

Boys ages 8-14 may participate in the Huntington University baseball team's 2010 Holiday Baseball Camp.

The camp will be held Dec. 29 and 30 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation.

Campers will receive a T-shirt. Parents are welcome to stay and watch during the camp.

The completed registration form and payment must be submitted no later than Dec. 19.

Miller's 27 leads HU women to 81-70 victory over Rio Grande

Sarah Miller's 27 points led four Foresters in double figures as the Huntington University women's basketball team ran past visiting University of Rio Grande for an 81-70 win on Saturday, Nov. 27.

Miller knocked in 9 of 16 field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Foresters to their seventh win in eight outings this season. She had plenty of help, though, as Kelsey Green added 15 points on a perfect 7 of 7 from the field and Lauren Meese and Taylor Foley chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

HNHS girls' basketball team falls just short after another big comeback

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team almost picked up a third comeback victory on the season but fell just short to host Homestead on Friday, Nov. 26, losing 40-39.

The Lady Vikings, 2-3, were down by 12 points at 26-14 late in the first half before a big third quarter brought them into a 31-31 tie after three quarters of play.

Senior center Kayla Schenkel led the HNHS efforts with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Taylor Pursifull added 10 points to the HNHS cause.

Emily Bley led Homestead, 3-0, with 16 points.

Eastbrook edges both Salamonie boys' basketball teams

Salamonie School's eighth grade boys' basketball team was edged by Eastbrook Middle School, 42-38, on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Walker Spahr led the charge for Salamonie with 13 points. Andrew Nelson had 11 and Austin Eltzroth added eight.

In seventh grade action, Eastbrook slipped by Salamonie 52-49.

Isaac Smith took control of the game, scoring 32 points. Spencer Sharpe added 10.
