Construction on CR 300W will close road — and landfill — on June 10

A construction project on CR 300W in Huntington County, which was originally scheduled for June 3, was postponed until Thursday, June 10, because of heavy rains that were expected last week.

County Road 300W, between Etna Road and CR 300S, will be closed to all through traffic on Thursday, June 10, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The road will reopen at approximately 3 p.m. the same day.

The Huntington Landfill, which is located on CR 300W, will also be closed because work on the road will make the landfill inaccessible.

State police consolidating posts

Three Indiana State Police posts will be permanently closed this summer and fall, Indiana State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell announced on June 3.

The Fort Wayne post, which serves Huntington County, will remain open but will be responsible for two additional counties when the Redkey Post closes on Nov. 1.

Along with the Redkey post, closures are set for the Terre Haute post on July 1 and the Connersville post on Sept. 1.
A fourth post, in Seymour, was closed in March.

Abbett announces he’d like to return as mayor of Huntington

Former mayor of Huntington Terry Abbett announced on Tuesday, June 1, at Huntington University's Habecker Dining Commons his intentions to run again in the next mayoral election.

He told his audience of nearly 40 supporters and family members that he has missed the office everyday for the last three years. He plans to run on good leadership and transparency.

"There's a lot of doom and gloom around the community," he said. "It's time to fire it back up ..."

Posey Hill construction set for summer

Roanoke residents can expect to see some construction work on Posey Hill this summer.

The Roanoke Town Council, during its Tuesday, June 1 meeting, approved a contract of just under $417,000 to complete the Posey Hill project. The entire street, including curbs and sidewalks., will be replaced. Work is expected to begin by July with paving to be completed after August. The entire project is slated to be finished before the first snow of winter.

County resident Steven Ochs to run for sheriff as independent

Retired Marine major and Huntington County resident Steven Ochs has announced his intentions to run for Huntington County sheriff as an independent candidate in the November general election.

"Today, I am announcing my intentions to run for Huntington County sheriff as an independent candidate in November," Ochs said on Wednesday, May 26.

BZA agenda includes two signage appeals

The Huntington Board of Zoning Appeals will hear requests to allow two non-conforming signs during its meeting on Monday, June 7.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in City Council chambers on the third floor of the City Building, 300 Cherry St., Huntington.

The Huntington County Community School Corporation is requesting a pair of variances to development standards in order to erect a new sign at the MacGahan Street entrance to Huntington North High School.

Health department offers ‘last chance’ shot clinic

The Huntington County Department of Health is offering a "last chance" clinic where local students can receive vaccinations that will be required for entry into school this fall.

The clinic will be offered in conjunction with sports physicals June 1, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Huntington North High School, and will be repeated June 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., in conjunction with sports physicals offered at Lancaster Elementary School, says Debra Doctor, public health nurse with the Health Department.

Huntington Street Dept. to close for holiday

The Huntington Street Department will be closed for Memorial Day, on Monday, May 31.

The trash schedule is as follows:

• Monday's trash schedule will run on Tuesday, June 1.

• Tuesday's trash schedule will run on Wednesday, June 2.

• Wednesday's trash schedule will run on Thursday, June 3.

It is asked that items be ready for pick up by 7 a.m. on each day.

 

New version of city services fee expected to raise $600,000

A new version of a city services fee, amended to exclude city utilities customers who pay for private trash pick-up, will bring in an estimated $600,000 during the 10 months it is in effect, city administrators say.

The fee received final approval by the Huntington Common Council on Tuesday, May 25, and will be assessed to Huntington residents starting in July.

Lincoln aide fired; bus, computer bids sought

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees fired a staff member and permitted the corporation to advertise for two bids at its May 24 meeting.

Certified employee Angie Rice, a professional assistant at Lincoln, was unanimously terminated from her position "due to an employment related concern," Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer explained, of "not meeting performance expectations."

HCCSC board approves 12 summer school teaching positions

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved recommendations for 12 summer school teaching positions, two of which currently teach outside of the corporation but have taught in Huntington previously, at its May 24 meeting.

Those currently from the corporation include Jeanette Campbell, Sue Ellet, Tom Spahr, Steve Saddington, Aaron Cripe, Scott Wilcoxson, Julie Hoffman, Shoshannah McKinney, Dave Blocker and Tom Alexander.

Grant will restore HFD to previous capacity

The Huntington Fire Department is planning to rehire six previously laid-off firefighters thanks to an $817,360 grant the department received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Thursday, May 20.

The grant is designated for operations, including hiring, and is funded through the United States Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER).

The city still has to formally accept the grant to receive the money.

Unapproved minutes still plaguing Andrews council

The Andrews Town Council conducted regular business at its meeting on Monday, May 17.

The council decided to table the minutes of the Nov. 9, 2009 meeting and the April 12, 2010 meeting because Council President Bob Gray was absent for the meeting. The Nov. 9 minutes have been a source of debate within the council for the past six months.
