Wayne Metals gets tax break on expansion project

The Markle Town Council approved two tax abatements on Wednesday, Nov. 17 for projects at the Markle industry, Wayne Metals.

With the abatements, the business won't pay the full amount of taxes initially, but rather taxes will be phased in over time until the company is paying the full assessment.

Wayne Metals is purchasing manufacturing and information technology (IT) equipment, with an estimated cost of about $1.5 million.

Wayne Metals is also constructing a 36,000-square-foot addition to the existing facility, with an estimated cost also of about $1.5 million.

Restriping repaved road a Zanesville priority

The Zanesville Town Council will make restriping the recently repaved sections of Marzane Road and Old Ind.-303 a priority to be completed before winter, the council decided at its meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18.

The striping has been delayed because the contracted company is concerned about the weather, said Councilman John Schuhmacher.

The council voted 3-0 to allow Schuhmacher to arrange to have the roads, both in Wells County, striped as soon as possible. The council set the maximum funding for the project at $2,000.

Fetters throws hat in ring for Huntington mayor post

Brooks Fetters has announced his candidacy for the mayoral election in May 2011 on Friday, Nov. 19.

Fetters is a 1977 graduate of Huntington North High School. He worked for the City of Huntington's engineer office from 1978 to 1981. He graduated from Huntington University in 1981 and 1987.

He is a long-time volunteer for United Way, and is an active member of the Huntington Rotary Club and College Park Church.

He also volunteers for Pathfinder Services, Huntington University, McKenzie's Hope and the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington County.

Ebersole to run for Huntington mayor

Huntington City Councilman Erv Ebersole (R-1st District) has announced his intent to run for the Huntington mayor position for the 2011 election.

Ebersole made the announcement at a meeting of the Huntington Kiwanis on Thursday, Nov. 18.

"I want to see that money and grants we apply for are used for good projects," Ebersole says. "I want to move forward with projects that are key issues in the city."

Ebersole is a lifelong resident of Huntington County, and a 20-year city resident. He has served on the city council for four terms, or 16 years.

Augustine to assume 122nd lead

Col. David L. Augustine will assume command of the 122nd Fighter Wing, based at Baer Field in Fort Wayne, in January.

Augustine will succeed Col. Jeffrey A. Soldner, who plans to retire. Soldner has served as commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing since 2004. He joined the Indiana Air Guard in 1972 while attending Purdue University.
Augustine currently serves as vice wing commander of the 127th Wing, based at Selfridge Air National Base in Michigan.

Census Bureau recognizes Andrews’ efforts

The town of Andrews has been recognized by the United States Census Bureau for its efforts in ensuring an accurate count for the 2010 Census.

Andrews' efforts were noted by the Complete Count Committee, a sub-group of the Census Bureau that tries to get communities to achieve the most precise count possible, said Andrews clerk-treasurer Bill Johnson.

"We put forth the effort to get as full of an account as we can to ensure the proper distribution of tax revenues," Johnson said.

Local woman graduates from Air Force basic

Air Force Airman 1st Class Taylor M. Murrill recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.

Murrill completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Murrill graduated in 2009 from Huntington North High School.

Markle Fire Department honors 12 for service

Twelve current and former members of the Markle Volunteer Fire Department were recognized for their years of service during the department's Nov. 10 meeting.

Walt Reiter, District 7 chairman of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, presented the men with their pins and certificates.

Three men, all retired from the department, were awarded 50-year recognition. They are Robert Buroff, Donald Marshall and Dennis Kreisher.

Banks to be sworn in Nov. 16

Columbia City resident Jim Banks will be officially sworn in as one of the newest members of the Indiana Senate, representing the District 17, on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

The swearing-in ceremony will be conducted by Supreme Court Justice Randall Shepard in the Statehouse Senate Chamber, in Indianapolis.

Banks, a graduate of Columbia City High School, earned a degree in political science from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Andrews council to sponsor library’s request for county’s CEDIT funding

The Andrews Town Council agreed to be the sponsor for the Andrews Dallas-Township Public Library's request for county CEDIT funds at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 8.

Nancy Disbro, Andrews librarian, said that in order to request CEDIT money from Huntington County, the town needed to be on record as a sponsor of the project. The request is part of the library's continued efforts to secure funding for an expansion project through federal and state funding.

Warren adopts wastewater rate increase

The Warren Town Council made light work of the few items on its agenda on Monday, Nov. 8.

An ordinance increasing wastewater rates by about 20 percent was unanimously approved. A typical user of 4,000 gallons of water can expect and increase of approximately six dollars, council members said.

During the public hearing on the ordinance, one letter was read supporting the increase as being necessary, but no other comments were submitted.

Newcomers to take seats on Markle, Roanoke town councils

A couple of newcomers are anxious to take their seats on town councils in Roanoke and Markle after the first of the year.

"I'm excited to be returning," says Troy Karshner, the only current town council member to be returned to his seat. Karshner currently serves as vice president of the Roanoke Town Council. "I'm back in it ... I look forward to continue serving the town."

Karshner and Eric Sands will begin their four-year terms on the Roanoke council in January, following their election wins on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

SWMD sets additional meet for Nov. 15 to discuss recycling drop-off proposal

The Huntington County Solid Waste Management District Board of Directors will hold an additional meeting on Monday, Nov. 15, at 8 a.m., in the Commissioners' Room of the Huntington County Courthouse.

The meeting is being held to discuss responses to the request for proposals received on Nov. 1 regarding the district's drop-off recycling program.
