Lake City Bank, in Huntington, has been selected by the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors as the business of the month for April. Low-cost pet vaccine clinic at fairgrounds

Dog owners can bring their pets to a low-cost vaccination clinic on Saturday, April 15, in the Community Building at the Huntington County Fair- grounds.

The clinic is a fund-raiser for the Canine Capers 4-H Club, sponsored by Dr. Jill E. Reinholt of Riverside Veterinary Clinic.

The clinic will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., but appointments are required. To register, call 530-6483. Payments must be made in cash.

Cattlemen to meet April 19

The Huntington County Cattlemen will meet on Wednesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Huntington County Courthouse Annex. 

The agenda items include the 2017 Preview Show review, the food tent at the 4-H Fair and other old and new business.

Local robotics team earns state title shot

Josef Thomson, a member of Huntington County Robotics Team 1501, pilots the team’s “airship” during a district competition held March 24 and 25 in Indianapolis. It was the final competition of the season and the last chance for the local team to qualify for the state contest it will host in Huntington April 7 and 8, and the team’s first place finish in Indianapolis placed it securely in the state finals. Team 1501 also won the Indianapolis contest’s Imagery Award, recognizing its visually pleasing appearance, and judges made a special note of complimenting Thomson’s appearance.

The Huntington County robotics team captured a first place finish in its third and final district meet of the season, guaranteeing the team entry into the state championships to be held in Huntington April 7 and 8.

Team THRUST 1501 won the gold medal at the IndianaFIRST district competition March 24 and 25 at Perry Meridian High School, in Indianapolis. The local team also won the meet’s Imagery Award, which recognizes attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration from the machine to the team appearance.

Zanesville Antiques has new life, plans to grow

The brick building on the corner of Scott and Wayne streets in Zanesville has been home to a lot of things, beginning with an Odd Fellows hall.

Now, it’s home to an eclectic antique store, a venture that originated in 2000 but fell by the wayside 12 years later, a victim of what owner Becky Behning calls “the busyness of life.”

Now, with the help of Fran Heyer, Zanesville Antiques is once again opening its doors on a regular basis.

HU names keynote speaker for graduation

Shirley V. Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, will be the keynote speaker at Huntington University’s 119th Commencement on Saturday, May 13.

The commencement ceremony will be held in the Merillat Complex fieldhouse beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Hoogstra became the seventh president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities in September 2014. In this role, Hoogstra promotes the value and purpose of high quality, Christ-centered liberal arts education.

Cancer Services seeks walkers for May fund-raiser

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana will hold its 2017 Lapper fund-raising walk and Survivors Day Celebration on Saturday, May 13, at 9 a.m. to raise money to help local people with cancer-related expenses.

There are three ways to participate: raise money and walk at the event, make a donation or become a sponsor. Many participants walk or donate in honor of a friend or loved one.

Beckler moves to more spacious digs down block

After nearly a quarter century in its former location, Beckler Power Equipment has moved down the road to a newer, more spacious building at 1255 S. Jefferson St., in Huntington.

And with the new breathing room has come expansion, says business owner Tim Beckler.

“I bought the business in August of ’93 on South Jefferson,” he explains. “We just outgrew that location. We really had trouble with parking — we didn’t have enough room. The business has grown a lot, we were crowded and we needed a larger parts department.”

Creating a course

Poling, Zehner earn Optimist honors at Riverview Middle School

Grace Poling and Zach Zehner, eighth grade students at Riverview Middle School, have been recognized by the Huntington Optimist Club with the Optimist Youth Appreciation Award.

The award is presented annually to two students from each Huntington County middle school and three students from Huntington North High School who demonstrate outstanding dedication and service to their school, the community and its citizens.

Poling and Zehner were nominated for the award by the Riverview staff.

Fire marshal to present next safety council program on codes, inspections

David Teusch, fire marshal of the Huntington Fire Department, will present the next Huntington County Safety Council program on fire codes and inspections, on Wednesday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the Pathfinder Services conference room, 2824 Theater Ave., Huntington.

The meeting includes a lunch buffet served by Kim’s Katered Affair.
