Roanoke, Huntington churches set June blood drives

The Red Cross says giving blood this summer is as easy as one, two, three.

"Think of it this way," says Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. "One: It takes about an hour to donate blood. Two: Someone in America needs blood every two seconds. And three: up to three lives can potentially be saved through a single blood donation."

Red Cross officials hope it's that kind of thinking that can help people see it's relatively simple to make a difference.

Holbrook aims to bring awareness to disease

Doctors didn't have a name for the disease that caused her grandfather's death.

A generation later, doctors knew that her uncle had a particularly brutal form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but couldn't help him.

"He was dying for five years," says former Huntington resident Shari Prus Holbrook. "It was terrible."

When Holbrook, who now lives in Kendallville, was diagnosed in 2002 as the third generation in her family to have IBD - she suffers from a form known as ulcerative colitis (UC) - the medical field had made dramatic advances.
