Motorcycle ride, party Aug. 28 will benefit Hughes

A benefit to raise funds for Huntington resident Jerri Hughes will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Izaak Walton League clubhouse.

Hughes, 49, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Bob Blubaugh, a friend and one of the event coordinators, says the cancer is inoperable and chemotherapy will give her a chance at a longer life. Blubaugh says he's known Hughes since seventh grade.

Hughes is a single mother of four and a grandmother of one. She has been a waitress, cook, bartender and business manager in town her whole life.

Cars and motorcycles to be on display on Sept. 11

The second annual American Legion Post 85 Car and Motorcycle Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1410 S. Jefferson St. in Huntington.

There is an entry free per car and motorcycle, and registration is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The awards will be announced at 4 p.m.

Parking is on a first come, first served basis, and event organizers will park entries.

There will be door prizes, food, drinks, music entertainment and a 50/50 drawing.

Century celebration

Fred Winkelman blows out the candles on his birthday cake, held by Robin Lipp, during a party on Thursday, Aug. 19, celebrating Winkelman's 100th birthday. Lipp is the property manager of Rivergreen Apartments, where Winkelman lives, and organized the party for Winkelman and other residents of the apartment complex. Winkelman, a Huntington native, has lived at Rivergreen since 1998 and continues his tradition of hitting a local restaurant for brunch every day.

Safety Council to hear Chynna Presley

Chynna M. Presley, an education advocate for the Fort Wayne YWCA, will present a program on domestic violence in the workplace during the Sept. 8 meeting of the Huntington County Safety Council.

Presley earned a bachelor of social work degree from Huntington University and worked in foster care case management for two years before joining the YWCA as education advocate. The focus of her message is diversity, domestic violence, safety and creating healthy relationships.

Pathfinder accepting nominations for 25th Herbert LaMont Award

Pathfinder Services is accepting nominations for its 25th annual Herbert D. LaMont Award.

The award is designed to recognize someone in the community who has made an extra effort to assist persons with disabilities. The award is given in memory of Herbert D. LaMont, an early supporter of Pathfinder Services and a major force in the development of services for persons with disabilities in Huntington County.

The nominee must be active in Huntington County, and the nomination must include concrete examples of the nominee's activities.

Three locals on Asuza Pacific spring dean’s list

Three local students have been named to the dean's list at Azusa Pacific University for the 2010 spring semester.

They are Matthew J. Cherry, Spanish major; Tayah Kline, music major; and Bret L. Thompson, undeclared major, all from Huntington.

To be named to this academic list, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or better.

APU is located about 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles, CA.

 

Many Huntington County 4-Hers earn ribbons at state fair

Unofficial results of many non-livestock projects at the Indiana State Fair have been announced.

Following are ribbons earned by Huntington County 4-H members:

Ag Tractor
Michael Winters, Level B Poster, blue; Julie Winters, Level C Poster, merit; and Kaitlyn Winters, Level D, blue.

Aerospace
Nicholas Stucky, Grade 3-5 Rocket, blue; Nathan Park, Grade 6-8 Rocket, blue; and Austin Stucky, Grade 9-12, red.

United REMC's Operation Round Up donated $1,000 for Huntington law enforcement agencies to buy 3,000 DNA kits for families to have their children's DNA samples on. Pictured are (from left) Huntington Police Chief Tom Emely; Mike Kelsey, United REMC of Markle employee and Operation Round Up board member; and Deputy Sheriff Tom Carney. The small kits include instructions, a swab and an envelope to seal the sample, which is good for about 10 years if kept in a freezer. Operation Round Up is a grant awarded bimonthly by the board.

Cancer Services to hold sixth annual tribute dinner

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana will host its sixth annual tribute dinner at the Fort Wayne Marriott on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

This year's event, "Bridging Troubled Waters: A Reflection on Life's Journey," offers an opportunity to pause, treasure the memories of people who have been touched by cancer, and pay tribute to them, whether a cancer survivor, caregiver, physician, or lost loved one.

Daniels named to dean’s list at Oklahoma Wesleyan University

Andrew Daniels, of Warren, was named to the dean's list at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, OK, for the spring semester 2010 and fall semester 2009.

Students must earn a scholastic average of 3.5 to 3.99 to earn dean's list honors.

Daniels is the son of Terry and Melinda Daniels and was a member of the Huntington Eagles basketball team.

 

Habitat seeking donations for fund-raising auction

Huntington County Habitat for Humanity is seeking donations for a fund-raising auction to be held on Oct. 16.

The live and silent auctions will be accompanied by a dinner at Central Christian Church.

Habitat spokesman Paula Whiting says the organization is seeking contributions of new items and services that can be auctioned off. Tickets to sports and entertainment events and gift cards are also welcome, she adds.

Anyone with items to donate is asked to call the Habitat office at 356-7425. Contributions must be made by Sept. 17 to be listed in the program.
