Harmony Feasting

Participants of the inaugural Harmony Feast take in a beautiful evening nad a varied menu of food at the inaugural Harmoney Feat on Friday evening, Sept. 17, in the Huntington Plaza parking lot. The evening was the first community event sponsored by the Harmony Initiative Task Force, a group of community leaders dedicated to building awareness of the different backgrounds and life experiences the county's residents bring as they work to make a better future for all.

The Cost of Freedom Wall displays the dog tags of service men and women who have died in combat from Vietnam to the present. The monument is part of the American Veterans Traveding Tribute, which will be on dsiplay at Hier's Park in Huntington through Sunday, Sept. 19.

Homecoming candidates

The 2010 Huntington North Homecoming Court has been announced through a student body vote. One girl and one boy represent the freshman class, the sophomore class and the junior class. Four girls and four boys from the senior class are up for homecoming queen and homecoming king, who will be crowned Friday night, Sept. 17, at halftime of the Huntington North homecoming football game against Anderson.

Shelter to have golf tourney Saturday for fund-raiser

Huntington County Humane Shelter will hold a Florida scramble golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Norwood Golf Course, Huntington.

The rain date is Sept. 25.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. Pop, beer and snacks will be sold throughout the event.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the day for various events.

There is a registration fee per person, which includes cart, lunch, green fees, Mulligans and skins.

Parkview CEO Packnett to speak at annual HU Foundation dinner

Huntington University's annual foundation dinner will feature Mike Packnett, president and CEO of Parkview Health.

The dinner will be held on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. in the upper level of the Habecker Dining Commons on Huntington University's campus with a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

At the dinner, Packnett, who joined Parkview Health in June 2006, will speak about Vision 2020, an initiative to improve northeast Indiana by 2020 through improved businesses, education, infrastructure and the general quality of life for residents.

Pathfinder seeks tax preparation volunteers

Pathfinder Community Connections, the community development division of Pathfinder Services, is seeking volunteers to assist with its tax preparation service.

The service will be provided to anyone with a low to moderate income. Last year, the first year for the program, 16 volunteers helped prepare 465 tax returns.

Volunteer tax preparers will receive training to prepare basic individual income tax returns. Those classes will be held in December and January in Huntington.

Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters and answer phone calls for the program.

PAL honor

One of the three flag football fields was named in honor of Scher, and the other two fields will bear the names of the late LeMoine Drabenstot, who served 17 years on the Huntington County Sheriff's Department and was a former sheriff, and the late Greg Hedrick, who served as a Huntington police officer and was active in PAL activities.

On Friday, Sept. 10, Lincoln Elementary got a special visit from the president after which their school is named. Pictured is Abraham Lincoln speaking with a group of kindergarteners about books he found in the school library that talk about his life. The visit was apart of the school's celebration of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's inauguration and included lesson stations about life in 1861, such as a cannon demonstration outdoors. In the afternoon, older students got to play a round of baseball with the Champion Hill Toppers Base Ball Club.

Survivor to speak at next cancer support meeting

Charles Miller, a cancer survivor and founder of a cancer support group, will discuss alternative treatments for cancer during a meeting on Monday, Sept. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Miller, who worked in the computer field for 36 years, survived surgeries for skin cancer and removal of a kidney cancer. He founded the Detroit-area HOPE cancer support group in 2002 and is now working with cancer support groups full time.
